2001 S600 as a Daily?

Saw one for sale recently for only $4,000 with reasonable miles on it, in a upscale neighborhood, could be very well maintained, etc.

The insurance on the car would cost me less than ensuring a newer model E Class.

I know the engines and transmissions are very good.

What else is there on a 600 that would kill me to drive it every day?

I feel like I'm supposed to be deathly afraid and that it's a bad idea, but somebody please tell me why!

Edit: I am kinda answering my own question. It's basically race engine shoved into luxury car with $1,200 ignition coils if one of them fails... I mean, this is a bad daily driver especially if I want something 'sensible.' ....

If I want one sensible and practical MB for daily use, the S600 is not the one I want if I am budget conscious. Feel free to add comments!! Fun idea to entertain for sure! hahaha

Mine has been a daily driver. It's a wonderful car to drive.

The maintenance cost/mile is a lot higher than other cars. The fuel cost/mile isn't great, either.

But depreciation is zero. Taxes are low. Insurance is low.

My opinion: a W220 is happy if it's driven daily. It will get cranky and start having issues if it sits for a long time.

Sensible? Well, no, not really. If you were completely sensible, you would be shopping for a clean, 4 cylinder Corolla...

A 2001? That's the M137 version of the V12 engine, which has the known design defect involving the oil cooler gasket. The gasket itself isn't so much the problem, but replacing it is about an $8,000 job, and it has to be done about every 70,000 miles. Why so much? It's because you've got to pull both engine heads to get the oil cooler out. Please, don't buy that car unless you're ready for that kind of expense!

A 2003 or later S600, if you want a V12, is the way to go. The 2003's and later have the twin-turbo version, the M275, like Astro14's and my car have. The M275 has a totally different engine oil cooler design; it is much more reliable and less costly than its M137 predecessor. The M275, in its "M279" variant, continues to be used in the 2019 Mercedes-Maybach V12's sold today; it's that good of a design.
