Hi,

Thanks guys .......................

It is simply because all our local Garages haven't moved with the times, and aren't interested in doing much more than an Oil and Filter, MOT Tests and MOT Repairs, all this kind of stuff is beyond them, and they have had their fingers burnt before, so all they do is send their customers to me !!

This is why I am so busy these days

This is a common failure, rust or ham - fisted mechanic doing other jobs is the cause.
It is a metal toothed ring on the back of the Hub, and I think MB do it separately from the Hub, see pix below apologies for quality I robbed them lol.

Newer Cars are now using a Magnetic Seal in the Hub Bearings as the trigger, and these are rotting, delaminating and failing inside a few years
Rears can be a right arse to do as you need to remove the whole assembly to press in a new Bearing assembly
@oliverp As your Indie is saying all Teeth are present tell him I said to look for play in the Wheel Bearing, a piece of rusty debris in between teeth, or run out on the Ring, (i.e. it is moving away from the Sensor as it rotates), it doesn't need much to get spurious wave pattern and then ESP / ABS Module throws a fit

HTH,

Cheers Dave

Thanks Dave! I will give him a call in a bit.
The last mechanic said he had to change a wheel bearing at the front, so I wonder if he replaced this one and something was damaged.
This mechanic is great, and he's from up your way (Glasgow)

Hi Ollie,

So did this occur soon after the Wheel Bearing Change ? If so I'll bet the guy fitting the Bearing bent the Reluctor Ring when pressing bearing in

If so tell the new "Weegie" mechanic, (show the new guy from Glasgow that, he'll know what it means lol), if it isn't too badly bent he will be able to straighten it out with care

BTW, "Weegie" isn't an insult if Glasgow's where he's from, but it's about 200 miles South of me

Cheers Dave

I just got the car back. I called the guy a Weegie and he head butted me and then doubled the price of the work. Thanks Dave!

Only joking of course.

It's all fixed. Dave was right that the reluctor ring was bent. The mechanic is going to send me some emails with photos that I will share. Unfortunately we couldn't source a reluctor ring quickly, so I ended up with a re-manufactured axle assembly. So with all the labor it was pretty pricey.

In Canadian $$:

$1460.23 in parts. $1200 for axle and $260.23 for ABS sensor (I asked them to replace this at the beginning)
$872.70 in labor

+ 13% tax.

I don't like spending the money but I think it was fair. There was a lot of time involved and I trust the mechanic.

Thanks again Dave

Ollie

Hi Ollie,

Did you try a Main Dealer for the Reluctor Ring on it's own ??

I'm sure I've bought Front ones in the past, and the Rears I keep in stock, the Rears fit onto the CV Joints, Rears are about 15 each

Still I suppose the main thing is your Car is back on the road

Cheers Dave

Hi Dave
I asked them and they said yes. They also said the dealer quoted $2200 for the axle assembly.
I am nervous now because EVERYTHING is working on the car. It's downhill from here.
Thanks
Ollie
