bent AMG rims

Time to go -1:

Great price too! Get metal hub rings if you have a spare tire. I heard they donít stick like the composite kind...

I actually like Tire Rackís website because you can sort the wheels by weight. (While I seem to have convinced www.tires.com to add the weight specifications to the wheels, I have not asked them to have a sort by weight feature. I didnít think they would listen if I had asked for both weight spec and sort by weight). All I do is go and sort by weight, so thereís a good possibility you may decrease unsprung weight, a big plus from my understanding. I am guessing the color should not matter too much regarding weight, but the different colored wheels of that style have different weights listed!...

An end to bent rims and blown tires?

I too have had enormous trouble with bent rims and blown tires on my 2011 E350 wagon. The rims are as soft as butter and the Conti tires pop if they even just pass a pothole. Tire and wheel costs have been by far the largest maintenance expense I have incurred with this car. So I want to do a Mercedes based -1" change out using the 17" wheels that came on some E350s. I think that part number is 207 401 06 02. Width and offset are the same as the 18s and they seem to be readily available refurbished. I will match them with a set of 245/45-17 tires (Michelin Primacy) which I think will go a long way toward alleviating my pothole problems.

However, I have the AMG sport package on my wagon. Does anyone know if the 17" wheels will have a problem clearing the brakes? Can anyone see any other problems with my plan?

Thanks!

I'd advise heavily that you get away from the Conti tires. I just finally had enough after my *fifth* tire replacement (2 last year on one pothole, one shredded, one big bubble, then recently discovered bubbles on two additional tires after a slow leak resulted in a flat at work). I know from running a carfax and from dealerships records that my vehicle has had bent rims fixed at the dealership in the past. So, when I recently had that flat at work, I took the opportunity to replace all four tires with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires. So far, so good. At a minimum, crossing my fingers as I write this, I expect less bubbles/damage from typical driving situations.

If you can find reburb'd OEM 17" wheels for the E-class and match them to another great Michelin tire like the Primacy, kudos.

If you must have OE wheels, do check here too:

www.car-part.com

FWIW I went to www.tirerack.com, selected '11 E350 wagon, 4-matic without run-flats, and went to the brakes. Only one choice for the front, so most likely you're good with 17s. Surprisingly they only have one wheel listed in 17 inch size, but it also is on sale for a very good price if you are okay with the color, and hub rings.
