Head unit

I'm planning to upgrade my stock head unit to an aftermarket android stereo, do i need to be worried about having any malfunctions after installing it?

You should cite the car in question on your profile and/or in the post you make. There are variations even within W211.

I am doing the same thing you are interested in doing and have even purchased the unit, but install has been delayed by some surprises and i won't have the car back for another few weeks.

The bad news is that you will almost certainly have to adapt analog outputs for L&R speakers to fiber optic transmission to amplifier in the trunk. It seems like all US W211 cars were shipped with fiber optic system and there are even 2 variations of that in the W211's. This requires a fiber optic converter box that costs another $100.

The good news is that many others have already done this conversion and there are lengthy threads on the subject in W211 and "Telematics" forum here at Benzworld & also at MBWorld similar forums.

There is also the option of entirely disconnecting the plastic optical fiber (POF) system; entirely bypassing it all the way to the trunk, but that would be a bit of more messy butchery to vehicle wiring and it is less clear what errors this would cause in vehicle diagnostic system.

The conversion is a bit of deeper subject than you may have expected.

User [Rossafuss] has done this and made some great posts and some youtube videos on the subject.

Study up first.

There are so many variations on these that the only way you are going to get definite answer on the POF is to remove ashtray & unit under radio (CD changer or whatever).

Youtube videos are easy to find on this for W211.

You will then see if you have POF system. If it is present, you will the the 2X POF's clad in orange.

In your case, it would be the MOST system if present.

OT1:

I think you're right about D2B rather than MOST. My 2003 W211 E320 has MOST system, but it looks like change may have happened that year.

A look at the conn on the unit is the definitive means of answering the question and you have to do this before you even start the job so that you know which parts to get to do the job.
