Deer murder/suicide 05 E320 CDI

So a deer killed my beloved E320 at 131k...a week after new Bilsteins and glowplugs were installed. I bought the car a couple of years ago with 58k. A month later, still fighting with insurance company over the value (car was in fantastic condition).

I think we are finally settling on a value and I will be keeping the car so my question is should I fix it or part it out? The car still runs and essentially needs a bumper, hood, fender, grill a/c condensor and at least one headlight. No bags blew and there is no frame damage. Im leaning towards fixing it and putting the E63 Sunveer bumpers/side skirts on it. What parts exactly do I need to update to the E63 front end? What is the best option for headlights...I hated the stock headlights from a light output standpoint. I drive A LOT and would like MUCH better lights up front so I can see the deer next time.

i have found several threads on the E63 conversion but nothing too recent and things have changed so much with lighting I am not sure if the older threads are still relevant.

Any help is sincerely appreciated.

A somewhat lesser version, an apparent slow-speed hit of some sort, had happened to my E320 CDI, at right around the same mileage as yours. The damage was as follows.

1.) a busted lower left bumper cover, which also took out the left foglight
2.) pretty severely dented front left fender
3.) some pretty good dings in the hood

I just replaced those parts. Fortunately, color code 744 Brilliant Silver Metallic is a popular color, so it was easy to find. $1,500 later, the car was ready to roll and passed inspection.

Sounds like your damage is pretty similar. Given how neat E320 CDI's are, in your situation, I'd just fix it and return it to stock. No need to go all AMG-ifying it, unless you just want the extra expense. The car's good-looking as it is.

As for the headlight conversion, I did do an HID conversion, using the factory headlight assemblies, and using Morimoto EVOX-2.0 bi-xenon projectors, Osram 66240 HID bulbs, and Hella Gen 3 ballasts. Polished the factory lens covers and applied some good, multi-year-lasting U-V protectant. It's been a year and a half now, and the headlights are a massive improvement over the original halogens. I can actually see Bambi at night now in that car.

Don't count on much profit from parting.
If you have space to play with the car and time, getting replacement body parts from local Junk Yard is the best way to go.
Bumper can be shipped with not much risk, so ebay comes to mind.
Good luck.

Indeed, I did get my new hood and fender from a junker car.

The bumper cover, a Taiwanese-made piece, came from FleaBay, already primed, from "Car Parts Wholesale". The Taiwanese have really upped their quality game over the years, because the build quality and the test fit were both quite good. Before installing it on the car, I took it to my body shop and had them hit it with paint. Let it sit for a couple of weeks to start curing, then installed it onto the car. I can thus recommend their bumper covers.

Nothing about any of this was difficult.

I really hope to face lift my CDi one day. maybe that will a little treat for her after hitting half a million miles.

I would certainly do the E63 body kit though, front and rear bumpers, and side skirts. also update the mirrors to the facelift style.

did the car end up being totaled and rebuilt? Or did the insurance company end up actually paying for repairs?

$6k for such repair sounds like real bargain as I know MB estimates would be at least double that.
What paint shop did good job (?) for low cost?
I usually get rid of aging MB mostly due to fact that repainting them cost more than car value. At least on West Coast.

I was looking at fenders on eBay recently (I won't be replacing mine but thought about it, damage is not bad enough to warrant it).

There are plenty of body panels already painted in 744, probably quite easy to find. If I had a garage to work from, I'd simply order the panels necessary and replace them myself. I don't think it would be too terribly difficult given you have the proper tools to do the job.

Good luck and hope you can fix your car.

Matt
