Crank position sensor. They usually fail when the engine is hot. Once the engine cools (thereby the CPS) it works again and the car starts. I have simply poured water on the CPS in the past to cool it down in order to get the car to start. In the situations you described the engine and CPS had time to cool down. The CPS is not an expensive part and fairy easy to replace. Cheers.
