Exclamation Bad Front Shocks?

Hi Everyone, my 2008 E350 with 89k miles has developed a new problem. When going over a big bump in the road or a pot hole the front right suspension is VERY harsh and hard. It slams into the ground it seems and feels like the shock is bottoming out. My suspicion is that the shock is bad. Is it common for shocks to fail on these cars? Its a regular shock NOT a airmatic model. I have noticed that the car pulls to the right every so slightly and driving over uneven roads i hear a faint "clanking" noise coming from that side of the suspension.

I have changed the upper control arms on both sides and inspected the lower control arms, minus some hairline cracks the lower control arms were fine.

Any input?

Shock, maybe, but I would make sure you do not have a broken spring. The early year W211's were notorious for spring breakage.

Thanks for the input, my W211 isn't a early model. Its a 2008. But im leaning towards the shock, i dont think anything else could make that noise/bottoming out feeling.

With 89K mile, the shocks probably need to be replaced. I did so on my CLK at 88K, and it greatly improved the ride and handling. Check the springs and the rest of the suspension while you're there.

Do you see any evidence of oil on the suspect shock?

Diagnosis sounds right. Compress the spring and test it on the pavement for rebound and it should be obvious. Replace in pairs. Pulling to one side side is likely a separate issue. Its very common for front bushings to crack by ~100k, so its likely either that, or the upper/lower ball joints. If you're seeing tire wear, its never "just" an alignment...time to replace the bad bushing.

Inspect everything while you are under.

Thanks,

Thanks,
Yes, after changing the shocks the improvement of the car has changed drastically, its much better. No more noises either.

I changed the front shocks, along with the rubber shock mounts.

At 85-90k miles i had to pretty much change the entire front suspension.

* Front Shocks with mounts

* lower control arms - these were making creaking noises over bumps and uneven payment - changing the lower control arms made the biggest difference in feel and response

* upper control arms - these were literally wobbling around and made a lot of noise as well

* sway bar links (they were not bad but at $20 a pop it made sense as preventive maintenance since everything else was new.

The only noise that i can hear is only over speed bump, but the bottom out feel is really bothers me. Thanks for the respond.

When i had noises over bumps that was due to my control arms, and shocks. If you have high miles it may make sense to upper/lower control arms along with the shocks all at once.
