2004 E320 - Red Battery "Visit Workshop" - Is it the Relay or Main battery

Hoping someone here can provide guidance...

I have been having the Red Battery "Visit Workshop" error for a while now. The message comes on immediately after starting the car. When it first started happening, it would clear itself after driving for an hour or so. Now it comes on every time I start the car and does not clear itself.

I assumed it was the aux battery and replaced that a month ago, but it made no difference.

The last few days I have accessed the service menu before starting the car, and find the battery voltage to be anywhere from 12.0 volts to 13.2 volts before starting the car. As soon as it starts, voltage jumps to around 14.1 volts.

I am suspecting either the main battery or the aux battery relay. The battery is not new, but seems to be holding a charge fine, so I hate to drop $150 on a new one if it is the relay. The relay I would have to order and is not returnable, so I also hate to spend $60 on that if it is not needed.

I am wondering if there is a way I can test the relay to determine which is the culprit, or if these symptoms help to diagnose? Or is there something else I should consider as the problem?

In case this is relevant, last winter it was not uncommon when starting the car below zero degrees to have the "Battery Protection - Convenience Functions Unavailable" message pop up for about a minute, but it always went away. The car always starts fine and does not seem to have a weak battery.

Any insight is appreciated!

The main battery should be load tested. If it is weak it needs to be replaced with a quality AGM style battery of the exact same size and capacity.

I did load test the battery, and it appears to be fine. I changed the Aux Battery relay, but that did not help either.

I was able to scan my car with Carly OBD2 scanner, and received the following list of Faults/Events. Perhaps this would give some insight on what to check next?

Note: I have not yet cleared ant of these codes a I didn't want to lose the data unless/until I had time to review them.

Due to length, I will have to break up the report into 2 posts. Here is part 1:

Not sure your specific issue, but the battery in our W211 was recently load tested - since we have experienced a completely random mess of red messages while driving. Come to find out, the battery terminal wasn't properly fastened and was just barely loose. Pushing it completely on and tightening has resolved the issue. It is at least worth a look.

You may want to clear the faults and rescan
These are mostly related to lack of battery power

Thank you, I will need to try that. I checked all cables and they are tight. I had thought that replacing the aux battery and aux relay would correct this issue. Perhaps though the ECU doesn't clear those codes automatically?

Unfortunately my OBD2 reader program won't clear codes, it will only read them. I could pay about $60 to get the PRO version of the software and clear the codes, but I would rather put that towards an iCarsoft or C3 system. I was just hoping I could clear the annoying RED FAULT in the meantime.

Use service mode to monitor voltage for a long time, this happened on my 2005 E320; voltage dropped down after 10 min driving from 14.2 to 13V, that's not enough to charge battery. Finally I changed alternator regulator, a $45 part, so everything works well.

I'm glad you had the main battery load tested. I'm curious if the aux battery that you replaced is not faulty? Perhaps measure the voltage on it after it sits all night and post the results here.

I recently had an issue with my aux(SBC) battery myself. I measured it after it sat all night and it was down to 11.71VDC. Started the car up while monitoring voltage at each battery and the battery in trunk went right up as expected as the vehicle tops it's charge off. The aux battery stays at 11.71 volts for around 30-45 seconds and then jumps to 14.15. Apparently the BCM charge circuitry/relay for that is working so that is good. If you see the same voltage swing as the BCM circuitry/relay kicks in then you know that's working like it should. I ended up installing a YUASA GYZ16H in mine since it has a 16AH capacity vs the 12 in the OE FIAMM version. Battery technology has come along way since 2004/2005.
