KEY FOB locks/unlocks , but no turn

Hey Guys - My 01 E55 woke up after a long winter's nap, here's what I did. Battery was low , so I took out the back seat charged battery in place. Started fine , reversed out of the garage, removed battery (Walmart MAX 900CCA) to give it a deep charge. Slipped the battery back into position , connected POS,NEG terminals, and installed the seat. Put key fob in , does not turn the switch. Locking and trunk buttons work properly, as does the security alarm.

Ideas and/or things I could troubleshoot ? I changed the key fob batteries (I believe its considered a Gen2 FOB w/metal key) , red indicators on the key works , IR with camera phone test passed...

Hard to believe the key fob fails all of the sudden after battery reconnect... Fuses to check ?

Need a 2nd key FOB as well - best source?

Many thanks !

Thanks for the link KHomer - I placed a 1.5 y/o fully charged battery (from dead) in position and hooked it up - now reads 12.0VDC and 40% ..... thinking the battery is shot...again. Feeling better about the issue now - will update with the resolution.

You need to remove and replace your battery. You should be getting at least 12.5V reading while the car is on start and you can check the voltage reading in your dual climate display.

Thanks Joe55 > I replaced the battery with a new one , key fob operates door lock/unlock , trunk release with no issues as before, however I insert the key fob in the ignition , it will not turn in any position , as if it is not recognized by the ignition. I haven't checked any fuses yet , and I hope there is one blown that would explain the dis-function. I would imagine is starts to gets messy if it leads to the key inter-lock, coil pick,etc... This car has been bulletproof over it's lifetime , and it takes the crappy quality batteries that last a year and a half to introduce problems... I got a shop manual on order , but until then , any ideas ? Thanks!

DINGUS_E55,

Try this.

1) Place the key in the ignition of your vehicle while the vehicle is turned off. ...

2) Pull the key out of the ignition while continuing to hold the "lock" button down. ...

3) Use another finger to push down on the "unlock" button five consecutive times. ...

4) Release the "lock" button.

Thanks KHomer2 - Tried the secret handshake you suggested, but no avail - the problem is the key, after I slipped the circuit board out and found the coil is only connected to one junction on the board. Repair is impossible with a soldering iron as the is all surface mount- two options only possible here - deposit a dot of solder paste and reflow with a focused IR system, or perform a cold joint with silver epoxy , which is safest bet.
Might work, but who knows ...

Do you or other forum readers have a preferred source for keys in 2019 ? I've read through benzworld and most of the links are no longer valid. Unfortunately , this is my only key , so its the dealer or maybe an alternative source. Thanks again for helping out - lucky the issue was isolated to the key, and not in the ignition column pickup coil, locking,etc..

Yours is a metal blade key in the fob (for the remote locks and alarm), correct?

Correct, metal key opens doors and trunk , FOB handles auto-locking,alarm, and ignition.

For the w210s, the FOB replacement is only available from the stealership - no other 3rd party source to replace the circuitry.
If you go this route, bring ID and proof of ownership to obtain a replacement FOB with blade key.
You may as well also pickup a "valet key" (no fob shell - just a key) that has the chip inside the plastic portion of the key to allow you to operate the car.

If you just want a FOB shell and blank blade key, check fleabay or aliexpress for a non-oem generic replacement. Check that the blank blade in the listing is the correct blade. Similar fob for the R129s but they use a slightly different blank blade.

The blank blades can be cut at any reputable locksmith shop (a tad more $$ to cut).
