Here in San Diego

a woman took her Porsche into a dealership for scheduled maintenance. While the mechanic was "road testing" her car he wrecked on an off ramp. He said there was loose gravel and that was the culprit. The CHP estimated he was doing 90MPH on the off ramp when he ate it. The car was totalled and the dealership cut the woman a check. But the check was for wholesale value on the car which was about $10,000 less than she would be able to replace the car. The dealership basically blew her off until she took her story to a local TV station who ran one of those invesitgative reporter segments on the whole ordeal. Don't know if they ever replaced her car or if they still screwed her.

Thats not proper and should be stopped by management. However when my ML is in the shop particularly for some sort of an intermittent problem I ask my SA to take it home after the repair before its returned to me to confirm the repair. He usually obliges. He lives 35 miles from the dealership so it does get more than an around the block test drive.
