First, Welcome to the forum..Thank you for your post...

Second, no because the 4Matics have a rear bell to accommodate the rear transfer case.

Third, What kinda problems are you having?

Let me guess. You got large metal chunks in the pan? To avoid that in the future. Swap the internals from a 2000-2002 Sedan to your 1998 E320 sedan, or unless you have a 4Matic...

Now, if you are stuck in 2nd and reverse more than likely you may have conductor plate problem, but the codes must be cleared from the connector under the hood even if you have new parts installed..

Stuck in 3rd gear . Then a valve in the 3rd gear circuit is the culprit...

Are the gears slamming hard? the regulation spring may be broken? 90's 722.6's suffer from this...

Is your TCM clean? No oil in it....

Let us know what is going on? We may help in avoiding a transmission replacement?

Thanks for the warm welcome!

My 1998 E320 S210 jerks when shifting from 1st to second gear, and from 2nd to 1st.

From a stop, when I depress the gas pedal, the vehicle takes time to accelerate unlike before, then suddenly jerks to second gear.

When I come to a stop, again it exhibits shift shock from 2nd to 1st.

Mine has the same problem, mainly when cold. 1st to second or downshifting 2nd to first. All other gears are buttery smooth. I believe its the regulator spring. I have one, just havent put it in yet.

For both of you it may be a broken spring and a leaky 1-2 shift overlap valve too

It can be worn frictions too and very possible with that a conductor plate starting to fail, and one can see the crack on the black speed sensor.

Here is some help:

I assume fluid is to proper level, and no fluid in the Transmission Computer?

thanks for the info martin, i'm going to order the overlap valve as well. 70k miles....I would think the clutch packs are ok. Fluid flushed and all service items replaced. Clean TCM, dry as a bone.
