w210 4matic problems no drive to the front wheels

Hi guys new to this form, thanks for any help. I have a w210 4matic with no drive power to the front wheels. A noise like a clunk comes from the transfer case or front drive line. The front end seems fine. Turning one wheel on the lift will turn the other or turnig both turn the front drive shaft even in park(!) When on a grassy hill both back wheels drive and spin. With kind of a side to side shuffle. ESP on or off. Some noise from the front like it almost engages. Everything I have read said that the car should not even move if I have even one wheel not conected like a bad drive axle or shaft. Strange 60k vibration on the road like a bad drive shaft. No history on the car. Only work done new front cv shafts, new rotors, the calipers are working freely, new rear wheel bearings. When the car is run on a hoist the back wheels turn the front wheels almost turn like some thing is hitting ever turn or almost driving them. I have studied the drawings and understand the system. Some times when I back up a round a corner the car resists and then a clunk from the drive line and then moves freely. Please any help would be great.

Sounds like a broken gear in transfer case. Can you replicate the clunk by turning the front driveshaft manually by hand and observing the front wheels?

Thanks for your reply. I will try tomorrow. But if I remember when turning the shaft I could feel nothing or hear nothing. I wonder if someone has been in there and modified it some how to just make it drive the rear. Instead of replacing the tc. Would you not think I should have no drive at all with a broken gear? Thanks

You are correct, if any wheel is not touching the ground the car really should not move, it has 3 open diff, so the power will take the path of least resistance.

I think you may need to open up the transfer case and see whats up.
