Key wonít turn

I have read and searched 4 forums but canít find a solution. The key is new. It locks and unlocks. But when I insert the key into the lock I only hear a buzz from the steering lock. Iíve tried turning the wheel both ways while inserting the key. I checked all the fuses.
What I found strange is the instrument cluster didnít come on as normal when the door is opened. What could cause that and are they related?

What year and model ?

Possibly steering lock, if the lock buzzes but does not unlock. If it unlocks, then the ignition switch.

If the lock does not unlock, and you hear the buzzing noise, the motor worm drive inside the steering lock that moves the locking pin in an out is worn out.

Options: After you remove it (hard job)

1) get a new steering lock from the dealer (needs to be programmed for authentication).

2) get the motor with the worm drive replaced, or if you can find the part replace it yourself. (not easy)

3) use a steering lock emulator ($20) from Ebay and the like. This will allow you to unlock the ignition lock, but the steering will be unlocked indefinitely.

If you keep trying, you may be able to unlock the steering wheel after many many tries.

for the heck of it, check that the car battery is healthy and is over 12.5 v at rest (preferably
over 13v) and doesn't drop dramatically when under load (such as when cranking)

Wow thanks. Just when I thought I knew everything about the w210. Thanks so much. Think Iíll try the emulator route first.
I know the battery is weak so Iíll address that too.

I charged the battery to 12.6 volts. Sprayed lube on the steering lock a few in/outs while turning the wheel and it started then stalled. Restarted and after a few minutes stalled. This time no starter engagement. I can turn the key but no start.
I guess itís a good time to use the emulator

It is much easier to remove the steering wheel lock when the wheel is unlocked

Also get a good battery if your battery is weak. You can get 12.8 (full) battery reading after a charge yet the battery can have no more than surface charge.

Do you mean it would crank few times you turn the key and then it does not crank ? or it cranks and starts, runs few seconds and the stalls few times ?

Have you checked the fuel pressure at the fuel pressure check valve ?

Typically, if the engine computer does not see the engine rpm reaching certain value (indicating that the car has started, and running) it will abandon the cranking. After a few times, it will not retry to save your battery. One way to restart is to disconnect the negative battery terminal and reconnect after few minutes (with radio code in hand, and knowledge of window, sun roof, seat resynch.)
