Misfire after downshift

2000 e320 This is now the second time this has happened. First was a routine downshift upon acceleration a year ago. A misfire immediately developed and CEL. Pulled over and restarted, misfire gone and CEL needed to be cleared. Had a "misfire on cylinder 3" code. Today, I I must have bumped the shifter into manual mode and the trans was in 4th at around 40mph. Slapped the shifter but in the "-" direction by mistake which caused a downshift and the same thing, misfire. It cleared on restart but CEL with "misfire on cylinder 4" code had to be cleared. Any ideas what to look for?

Was any recent work done on the car ?

Have you run the fuel down to minimum before filling up ?

Do you think it could be bad fuel ?

Since it is a travelling misfire (cylinder 3, cylinder 4 if I understood it correctly), it is unlikely spark issue.

Does the CEL flash ?

Codes that have set have freeze frame data. What is it?

What is your current STFT and LTFT?

Only work ever done to this car over the last three years is one coil pack, two cats, refrigerant top up and four tires. The CEL is hard on, not flashing until the code is cleared.

Can I get the freeze frame data if the code has been cleared? If so, any clues how to? As for STFT and LTFT, sorry I don't even know what those acronyms are for.

No you cannot. Most scanners warn that clearing fault will clear freeze frame data as well.

I have pending code P0400 "EGR Flow Malfunction" Here is freeze frame from that event.

Which coil pack ? The one for the cylinder that misfired in the past ?

Cylinder 3 is located closest to the firewall, and cylinder 4 is closest to the front at the opposite bank. Which makes me think it is a fuel demand issue (when you accelerate). Has the fuel filter been replaced at all ?

You may try a fuel system cleaner. It may help for some time, but if the fuel filter is plugged up, the only remedy is to replace it.

It may also be an air intake issue. Make sure that the air filter is clean.

Thanks. I will put the fuel filter on the list of things to do. As for the coil pack that had failed, yes I think it was three. I installed a new, from the dealer MB genuine coil pack and plug wires. I'll re check my work and make sure the connector is not loose.
