Flames of fire from my 2001 W210 E320 right exhaust tailpipe

After a hard drive at 5000 rpm today for about five minutes, I noticed lots of smoke coming out and flames of fire from the exhaust tail pipe... do I need to be worried @mrboca etal? What caused the flames of fire?

Although after parking it for a few minutes... the smoke disappeared on startup and driving...

Clearly, the 5 minutes at 5K warmed things up.

Any way to describe the smell? Exhaust, gas, oil, muffler.
They all have their own odor.

Car running OK? How is/was engine temperature?

How many miles on the car?

Skippy,

possible because I hear an unexplainable sound from the exhaust without leakage...but idle is perfect... even at standstill people wonder if the engine was running at [email protected]

Check underneath, see if the catalyst converter is glowing red.

Unburnt gasoline, burning. Normally, if the engine runs rich beyond air/ fuel mixture control, you get gas in the cats. All you need is O2 from the air which suggests a leak somewhere between the cat and the exhaust pipe.

Seems you are correct. I had a leak along the exhaust pipe. however I am interested in how to address the unburnt fuel issue.... my car does a litre to 7km...regular gas, hope that is ok?
