Exclamation Pictures of Y pipe upgrade / Muffler Upgrade....

OK here's a few pics covering what I wrote of in Post # 18:

The new Y-Pipe that replaces the factory MB resonator will give a cleaner flow to exhaust & less muffling allowing a deeper exhaust note to come thru.

Once the resonator is cut out, the process of connecting in & welding in the tubing to the Y-Pipe can begin.

It's important to get the tubes even, so that pressure from each cylinder bank is balanced. The shop foreman had suggested we buy the Pre-fabbed Y-Pipe for that reason, it takes the guesswork out of fabricating a properly balanced chamber.

After looking at it, we could have cut the twin pipes more forward, and then made a more sharply curving piece behind the Y-pipe.

But, hindsight is 20/20, right ? Hopefully our job can help others decide how they'd like to mod their exhaust.

The result is very satisfying to me, the exhaust note is now very sweet. It's not too loud but has a mechanical sweetness to it, while remaining civilized.

I grew up living near a Jaguar Mechanic and I know what our e-wagon exhaust note sounds like: quite reminiscent of a Jaguar E Type V-12, a trip down memory lane for me !

Hey David,

I could not wonder if your Tow Receiver is 2" or the wimpy 1- 1/4". Is it a 2"? where did you get it?

Exclamation YouTube Sound test clips coming soon....

...I'm planning on recording / uploading some YouTube video / sound clips of these mods to round out this report.

Also, it may be of interest to some here, especially if you have a V-8 in your E430 or E500 or have an ML.

I've also just completed an Exhaust Upgrade for our ML500, along similar lines, see here:

Thanks - David in East Texas

Martin:

Very custom piece - good eye !

1) Order Curt Brand 'Factory Fit' 'wimpy' size receiver hitch.

2) Visit Harbor Freight Tools, towing section. Get 'universal 2" receiver Tube hitch" (for bolting underside of truck bumpers) for roughly 20 bucks.

3) Go to local welding shop - hire them to cut off wimpy unit & weld on larger 2" model in its place. Make sure they add a reinforcing gusset to support it.

I just have many more options when towing now, as my several ball mounts are all with a 2" tube, Plus my main motiviation was we have a 4 place bike rack (Hollywood Brand, very heavy) and it's for a 2" opening.

I have no lllusions I'm going to tow above say 2000# loaded small utility trailer, in any case.

So, that's how to do it. You have to decide if it's worth the effort.

All this is crazy when you consider the Euro / German hitches for the E-Wagon all go waaay above what we get here....

Cheers - David

David,

My favorite is this- I melt when I see this-I want one to do that:

https://www.benzworld.org/forums/atta...apacity-11.jpg

This guy in the picture used a TULE from Germany, yet not available in the USA.

My wagon is my truck, so I'm always hauling something:

Thank you for the info. You mean the gusset at the receiver?

Martin

I also use mine like a truck. I drove about 30 miles with this boat on the roof (I took it easy and didn’t go over 45 mph!).

Good

Now, those door handles are held in place by interlocking, and you can snap that plastic, or bend the door sheet metal...

Exclamation Back to the exhaust Upgrade...

That's Awesome guys, great pictures - what these wagons can do....you're right they are darn good trucks.

Now that we have our ML500, I use that as my Truck much more so...but the beloved w210 is still capable as ever !

OK, back to the exhaust upgrade.

Here's a video or two to give more details of what has been done:

Main overview:

Resonator Delete Close up:

To hear the exhaust note properly on the Overview, good speakers are helpful.
