That rust doesn't look bad and even without additional protection it will not destroy the car in next 2 years.
But take a pictures of front spring perches and ATF/Brake lines around the engine.

I'm not an expert about rust, it looks bad, really bad but I don't think it's horrible, my opinion you can easily get a year or maybe little more with this, always remember that you are on borrowed time and sell it as quick as possible if you get a decent offer.
Let's wait and see what Kajtek will see in those pics, I'd trust his judgment on this rust issue.

OK will do tomorrow! Well you give me some hope. The mechanic seemed more concerned about all the original parts, saying it was going to run into money and with the rust it didn't pay to sink thousand in.
From what I remember, the front was clean, it was the rear that was an issue. Also some rust around the gas tank seam which I assume will eventually start to leak.
Yea a year or two without spending "too much would be fine.

Wait! Is this car a 4Matic? If it is, then 4matics are not affected from the spring perch rust issue, am I wrong? But having this much rust and a NE car I wouldn't be surprised if the front end was also affected. If you can work around the gas tank and somewhat secure it better I'm thinking you can easily make more than a year.

Looks OK to me! Its better than mine and I still consider my W210 a tank! Good for another 5 years buddy. Fix what you have to and drive it. Don't go nuts changing parts that may fail. It's plain stupid.

Yes 4matic
I will re-examine the front, but Idont believe there was rust there. I am assuming it was from the rear tires constantly kicking the water to the back. No rust in the doors or front body either.
