Replaced driver's side mirror glass. Old one turned bronze. Got a used one from Ebay for $35.

Replaced both outside mirror gasket.

1) Was it worth it?

$40 for the pair. Made in China. Probably cost them $2 to make and ship to the USA. Only one manufacturer as far as I know. Got to pay to play

2) How was the fit?

Not perfect. I would rate it an 8 out of 10. Modification was need for the wire harness plug to pass thru.

3) Would I do it again?

Yeah..........probably. I'm sure no one else would notice though.

Tip: If you're going to do this, removing the mirror cover will make life a lot easier. Test mirror function before reinstalling cover. Takes about a hour to do both side.

So about 2 weeks ago the e320 dropped a cup of tranny fluid on the floor. Thought it was the transmission output seal, went under to replace and to my joy it is the parking interlock seal (wayyy less work). Looking here at https://www.benzworld.org/forums/w163...ml#post3635948 it should be a couple hours and less work. Else the car is at 274k, just passed smog, and it just runs.

!! Over-engineer your safety - especially when working under the car

Replaced the wiper blade insert on my 2002 E320 today. Seems like the blade lasts about 4 years each time. I find that a clear indication to replace the insert is to monitor the operation of the rain-sensing wipe. If the blade is worn, it starts to wipe continuously or for long periods in a light drizzle since the screen is not cleared enough for the sensor to stop wiping.
The good news is that the replacement (Bosch Z375) only costs $8.50 and contains 2 inserts. The bad news is that I probably will not find the second one again when I need it in another 4 years.

replaced a broken passenger mirror (glass, adjuster & the metal mount - hard to believe the plastic housing suffered only a scratch) and the driver's side gasket. $35 from my local pick-n-pull. a driver, not to be named here, nailed a recycle container on trash day last week...

upon checkout, a cashier informed me she couldn't sell me the "guts" without the plastic body color cover. "ok, i'll go back and get it" (look for one in my color - i didn't say)... after returning, another cashier scolded me for "destroying it", when confronted with the "guts", plastic housing and opposite side gasket... i did my best to look chastened, parted with my funds and thanked her...

lucky for me these cars have become one big mechanic / dealer repair away from winding up in the boneyard.

a heartfelt (by my wallet) thanks to those for whom these wonderfully engineered machines are now disposable!

and an even bigger thanks to those on this forum who've shown me the way!

Trans fluid change?

Hey Fred - I see that you are nearby. I live in Concord!
I just bought a 2002 e320 and it has 140k miles. I have no history on it. It appears that the transmission fluid is ORIGINAL and has not been changed from the looks of it (original cap still on the transmission fill hole). My question is - do you think I should risk doing a drain/fill of the pan and replacing filter in transmission at this point? The car shifts okay (not as smooth as it probably should in my opinion) but I'm afraid of tampering with the fluid and making it worse. Any feedback is appreciated. I've been reading all about this on this forum and everyone has a different opinion......

Coolant and brake fluid change

Serpentine belt, idler pulley and tensioner

And, if not done at 100K, spark plugs

Check your flex disks, too.

Howdy neighbor!
Glad to meet a nearby forum member especially since Kajtek1 moved to Las Vegas. Yes, I think you should replace the fluid and filter on your trans if you think it hasn't been done. The "sealed for life" protocol turned out be only for the life of the tranny, which is shortened by not changing the fluid. There's a great DIY for this procedure in the stickies. https://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210...ion-fluid.html Note though, that the drain plug is torx not inhex. You can strip it out using an inhex.

Probably better than a pan drop would be a full flush. There's a DIY for that but all the pictures got stripped out. If it were me, I'd just have that done at the dealer...

Good luck,
Fred

i'd recommend a new filter along with a drain and fill. since yours has no drain on the converter, do it again in a few thousand miles.

i did read a procedure for the later cars w/o the torque converter drain that involved briefly running the car with the fluid line to the radiator disconnected to flush clean fluid through the system but, that sounded like a lot of work + the potential to run the trans dry if not careful with your measuring...

i did my car at around 200k (previously done around 85k), mostly for piece of mind. fluid didn't look / smell bad, trans seemed to shift a bit more smoothly afterwards. car's now approaching 245k and still shifts smoothly.

150k miles

Replaced MAF, removed and cleaned throttle body, replaced breather hoses, replaced vacuum hoses, replaced both valve cover gaskets, replaced plugs and wires, new air filters, new fuel filter, reset adaptation.

Runs so much better. Used to stumble a bit idling at stoplights.

1999 e320 4matic wagon. 298k. oil and filter, topside vacuum extractor so no mess.

bought it at 217k, just did front axles, struts, and all steering wear points about 1k ago. transmission fluid and filter at that time.

this car just keeps on going...

next up is rear window regulator rebuild, the lead button on the end of the cable inside the pulley failed. would be doing it today but I'm at my parents house and forgot the pop rivets and tool.

wife has a W211 and w212 wagon, we are an e wagon house. the w211 is a lemon, it's an 04 and has the dreaded SBC (we replaced it a couple of years ago), leaking rear air suspension, and now one of the wheel speed sensors is shot so abs, esp, and cruise are offline. interior and exterior are nice, plan is to get it back up to "everything works" and sell it. and I will NEVER buy a 2004-2006 w211. I MIGHT be persuaded to buy a 07-08 w211 wagon if it's in perfect condition, but because the rear seats don't fold flat I will probably look for a 2003 wagon when I get tired of looking at non structural rust on this w210.
