CV joint too worn? Please see pics.

Big thanks to the BenzWorld pros for helping me get this far with my CV boot replacement. Since my boot was fully torn, I'm trying to determine if the CV joint is shot, requiring a new axle. I don't remember hearing any clicking while turning though I always felt vibration. Couldn't many things cause that?

What do you think of the pics of the CV components?

After wiping everything clean (no chemicals), black grease remained in worn areas. Two balls have "large" wear spots which are rough to the touch while the other four each have a tiny scratch. The basket has two rough wear spots on its outer edge. The bell has grooves worn into it, but they are smooth.

Kajtek, my torn boot looked just like your brother's. Since you repaired his, I'm hoping mine is good enough to repair too. I'm considering reassembling this CV with a new boot and driving it to test. But who knows if the vibration is coming from the CV or elsewhere...

Basket touching the bell is very bad sign.
If you need replacement, I have 2 original axles for sale.

Thanks guys. Kajtek, how much for a front driver's side axle? Is it compatible with my 2002 E320 4matic wagon? How is its CV joint and CV boots? How many miles are on it?

I really only need the CV joint, so would you sell that separately? That would save me the work of removing my current axle, which I can't figure out how to do. Thanks.

You might be able to source the CV joint separately.. are there any markings on your current parts? Either that, or ring up a CV shop. You probably have several in NJ.

I was comparing the picture above with the joint I have for sale and small details are different. Like the colors, the cut on the basket, so I wonder if the joint above is OEM ,or maybe aftermarket. Can you read any imprints on it?

I believe yours is OEM, but perhaps from a different year. Your joint says LL inside the bell, while mine says AR. I think your brother's also said LL, according to your detailed disassembly thread. I wonder if AR and LL are not possible to be interchanged, perhaps because the axle shaft size or its number of splines. There are likely differences inside the bell, which might be irrelevant if simply swapping one to the other.

Those letters are from casting, so most likely indicate the melt shop.
But yours wears are pretty strange. The balls seldom show the damage as they are the most robust part, than your bell shows wear on both sides, what would indicate bad machining. If you pay the attention on mine bell the ungrind part between the runs is about 1 mm, on yours 2 mm.
