Anyone with a camera and e320

Can you do me a favor and pop your hood and take a few pictures of the passenger side hood latch?

I went to pop my hood this morning and only the driver side unlocked

I found a flap under the bumper to reach my hand into the engine but the headlights are obstructing my view of the hinge so I have been blindly feeling for a hinge or cable.

I know the hinge rests above the inner headlamp... I was also able to remove the back plate off the headlamps from the inside (didn't give me as much room as I'd hoped).

I keep feeling what feels like a gear (possibly for a headlamp wiper) - just wondering how close I am to the hinge

Any help would be appreciated

Bleh... I think I'm just going to take a drill to the hood this weekend

I'm pretty sure I can feel the cable and latch, but they don't budge

The way it works, is when you pull on the cable to open the hood, you open the drivers side first. The motion of opening the driver's side, then is used to open the passenger side - like a relay of sorts.

Do you think the cable to the passenger side has broken off? It is kind of hard to get to because the hooks on the hood "Sink into" the latch that is bolted flush with the support pieces.

This is the best pic I can do... I'll see if I can get a better pic later.

By the way, the cable to the passenger side is routed under the gold support piece (the one that goes across the front of the car above the radiator). The cable actually is right on the radiator. I imagine it would be very hard to get a hold of.

Thank you for the info

I am familiar with the placement of the latch and how it works... but I start to doubt myself when I'm blindly reaching around the engine compartment feeling around for the latch

I'm not sure if it is the same way with your e320, but on mine there is a little flap under the bumper I can reach my arm into. If I maneuver my hand correctly I can squeeze my arm around some tubing and in between a metal plate and the headlight casing. I was able to reach around and feel the cable to the latch and it feels like there is a little hook that it should be connected to (iirc).

The problem is that even though I can feel the cable I can't really position myself in such a way to pull it.

I'm also not sure if the metal thing I feel next to it is the lever or not. I remember during one of my attempts I was able to push what I thought was the latch, but it didn't unhinge anything and I was never able to push it again

Just a thought, but have you tried having someone hold the lever inside the car in the full-release/open position while you "bounce" each side of the hood over the latch points? Those little bumper adjustments can get moved inadvertently under there, and it puts too much pressure on the latch.

Good luck, that's not fun.

Nope, but I might go ahead and try that tomorrow

When I pull the lever the driver side unlatches just fine... but it is very difficult to get it to shut again. I was able to get it shut on both sides again and decided to wait to try again another day (I don't want to put any faith in the latch that is giving me trouble, especially on the freeway).

VIKTR,

On my '98 both latches appear to be the same. The cable feeds through the drivers side latch and continues to the passenger side. The tongue part of the latch is "U" shaped and bolted to the hood (2 bolts).
The cable runs under the radiator support and on the inside of it. Not accessible from underneath as the airbox is in the way.
The latch is pulled to the drivers side.

Pictures:
DSC2104 is drivers side. (cable feeds through)
DSC2105 is passenger side. (cable terminated)
DSC2107 is passenger hood latch.

Thank you all, these pictures are great... I'm going to go ahead and give it another shot after work today now that I won't be so blind

SkippyJasper, when you say "not accessible", in what way do you mean?

Looking at the photos cbc atl posted, I know I have been able to reach the little gear seen in the second photo. I know I also have reached the cable... just can't do much more than touch it though.

When I was looking at the passenger latch, I imagined how it could be triggered presuming the cable is broken. As you know from the drivers side you can feel the bottom and so I was trying to see how to do that if the hood I'd closed. It might be possible from underneath, but the portions of the air intake are in the way. I just remembered that you have the I6, so maybe there is more room. It's rather tight with the V6.
