Post W210 E430 AC Compressor Replacement Write-Up

Since I have not been able to find a write-up on replacing a defective AC compressor, I took photos and created a PDF file of the write-up, attached in two parts due to size limits. Also attached some general information I used to figure out how to perform the replacement.
In my case the compressor was not mechanically defective yet, but it was leaking oil. If yours is making noises, your replacement will be much more involved. Mine was still operating just fine so I elected not to replace the expansion valve.
The car is a 2001 E430, but the E320 instructions should be identical (might even be easier to get compressor out).

Nice write-up. Where'd you get your ramps and chocks?

Thanks for the compliment!

The ramps are from AutoZone (12,000lb ones, they just look stronger) and the wheel chocks are from Northern Tool& Equipment.

If you mean that the diagnostic on the AC control panel shows high pressure, it simply means you put too much freon in when you or someone else topped it off.
If you had it serviced, take it back and complain. They need to remove some of the freon from the low pressure port.
Do not try to release the pressure yourself, since compressor oil and freon will escape.

Great Write-up! Better than the WIS.

On another thread the OP couldn't get the fittings off the compressor in situ. So he removed the compressor from the front and above by breaking the suction and pressure hoses at the other end. He had to pull the fan and shroud. It seems to me that this might be preferable in terms of keeping dirt out of the compressor. Having never done this I don't know if it would be more trouble that it's worth to pull the compressor from the top.

Also, I note that you used the 7SBU16C rather than the 7SB16C that is called out in many parts books. I understand that the SBU is an updated version and eliminates failure problems of the SB. Where can one get the SBU and be confident of getting the quality Japanese Nippondenso unit and not a Chinese or Indian unit. It isn't clear to me from the parts listings I've seen what I'd be getting.
