Turn Signal Light Socket Problem

The driver's side rear turn signal light has developped a peculiar problem of late.

I get a bulb failure indication when I do a left turn. The bulb is fine. The socket is fine (no rust or other dirt, corrosion). Everything is pristine. I did notice that the conductor plate is not tight against the taillight housing. I put a tiny paper shim between the conductor plate and the taillight assembly before replacing the bulb socket so that it connection would be very tight.

This works fine..... for about 4-5 days, then it fails again. All I do is remove the bulb socket and put it back in and it works again.... for another 4-5 days and then I have to repeat the procedure.

Very aggravating. Now what invisible culprit could possibly be causing it to fail repeatedly after 4-5 days?

I have had similar problems on both my E320's. On closer inspection I found that the metal on the tail light assembly circuit had burned through and lost conduction. I have replaced two rear tail light assemblies. $120 at Mercedes and an easy job. When the third one went I didn't replace the assembly but when putting the bulb in I didn,t turn it the full amount, then I glued it with automotive goop...one year ago and all is fine

I am trying to imagine what it is that burned through and where to look to find it.

when you turn the socket and lamp assembly into the the taillight assembly the metal tabs on the socket are pressed onto the tail light circuit and after a while they can burn through it. Pull out the tail light assembly and remove the bulb and socket and inspect the tail light circuit. If it is burnt through...then when replacing the bulb and socket assembly don't turn it in as much..the contacts will now rest on the circuit that is ok and use automotive goop or a silicone adhesive to hold the socket in place.

I have had this problem, too. It seems to be the negative, or ground, circuit that fails most often. I soldered a wire to the underside of the ground contact on the lamp socket. I then loosened a nut nearby, that screwes tight to body sheetmetal. I looped the free end of the added wire under the nut and tightened. Now I have a great ground connection. I believe there is a sticky on this. Happy New Year!

I am relatively clueless about electrical devices. What identifies positive from negative on the socket?

If there's a wire

in sight, brown is always ground on German vehicles, you can splice a separate ground wire to the circuit board and splice it to any ground wire or use a nearby grounded bolt or nut. Hope it helps.

Great information. After reading your post I found that the sheet metal on my housing was also burned through. I was able to clean it up with emery cloth and it is now working again. Thanks for the information.
