V belt completely shredded ...

As I was driving back with a full carload of folks from a holiday party, the smell of burnt rubber and loss of power steering caused me to stop right in front of the fire department. The vbelt had been making a bit of noise for a few days, but it now it was completely caput.

Since I could not quite drive it I had it towed to a service station.

How did I do? Should I have parked it somewhere and attempted to replace the belt myself? How difficult is it to replace the belt?

I have successfully replaced a belt on my washing machine. And this seems like a similar kind of deal. Any thoughts?

There is no V-belt on the car.
Replacing serpentine belt takes about 3 minutes the SECOND TIME but sounds like you have bad bearing somewhere?
Find the routing in the manual.

Chances are you have a problem with a rotating accessory such as tensioner, idler pulley, etc. Before you put on a belt, rotate each one to make sure all of them rotate smoothly.

serpentine belt

Yes. It's the serpentine belt. I have not replaced it ever. You are probably right. There must be another issue besides wear/tear on the rubber belt. In the case of my washing machine it was a small sock blocking the pulley system.

So...I just went to the shop to take a look. The belt tensioner/pulley was jammed so that will be replaced. And the mechanic also recommended replacing the water pump. Of course I do not know if this is bolone or good advice. He said that it was moving a little bit and it should not. I checked it out and it did move a little bit. Supposedly the bearing inside is worn out and I should replace the whole thing.

Bad pumps usually leak, but if it has noticeable play, that is not a good sign.
That job will cost you, so shop around for deal on parts.
I paid $80 for the belt at the dealer before. Water pumps run in high hundreds.

Hmm...Strange then. They quoted me around $500 for the water pump job. And another $450 for the belt + jammed pulley part replacement.

That's the labor, or parts?
Water pump list for $408 and takes pretty long time to get to. There is a lot of aftermarket, or rebuild parts, so beware.

Thanks for the advice. I have no idea what kind of pump they will be putting in. Its a AAA facility. And the benz dealer is across the street. Maybe it is time to enroll in that Community College course. It is too late to save this repair, but I will try to do some other stuff like the heating issue, and brakes (I will still have to go to a shop I suppose).

evening all.....first time to site and thought i would use your expertise to see if anyone can advise me....i have 99 ml320 qwhich i love to bits...she just sailed through another mot but today when driving home i could smell burning rubber but not that bad....i checked under bonnet and saw nothing so drove towards home.....as i was down the street i heard some strange noises and then loss of power steering and alternator battery light came on on dash...
i pulled car over and looked inside engine bay......the serpentine belt is off and the big main wheel (dont know the name) is all wobbly and actually looks like come off......the grooved wheel i mean....
so firstly what is the main large wheel.......can it be replaced or reattachd and is it hard to do....im pretty handy around the engine bay and car in general.....have changed brakes and pipes.....replaced sensors and so on...
i look forward to hearing from anyone who may have some answers...
