Side View Mirrors - Symptoms & Several DIY Fixes

I just bought a beautiful '97 E420, but with big mirror problems on both sides. The driver's side was really screwed up by the previous owner trying to replace the glass with an amber lens, and I found cracked key plastic components inside. I also troubleshot and repaired the mirror adjustment switch. Before you buy the whole window / mirror switch module, please know that you CAN fix this component! Attached is a detailed doc file, pics and videos. This fix addresses the following symptoms:

1. Driver's mirror would work in all directions except one.
2. Driver's side mirror seemed a bit "floppy" vertically.
3. Passenger side mirror did not work at all.
4. A broken tension spring that had popped.

I hope this can help someone. I saved over $500 in OEM parts! Good luck, Mark in FL

Thank you Mark, the videos are great. May I suggest you to add some annotation on the pictures so that we know what we are doing?

I'll try to repost those pics with some annotation. I was late for a bike ride - it was a beautiful day at the time. If there are any specific questions, please ask and I'll try to help.

hi mark - my remote trunk release switch on that same switch assembly won't work. the light still lights up when the trunk is up, but i've checked the PSE hoses under the seat, etc., and all that seems to be fitting just fine. So do you know how I can troubleshoot and fix that short of replacing it with a used part? Best priceI've found at salvage yards per ohlord is $175, so don't wanna pay that just to fix one darn switch, particularly the trunk!

Current: 2014 E350 4Matic sport sedan, 62K miles, black/black; P01 Premium Pkg/Keyless-Go/Power Trunklid/pano roof/heated steering wheel/lighting package/driver assist. Purchased 1/2/17; Delivered 1/4/17.

Sold but not forgotten: 2002 E320 4matic sedan, black on beige ("sport" package - bird's eye maple trim, 17" sport rims), 108K miles upon sale.

RIP: 2000 E430 4Matic fully loaded - totaled 12/9/2006

Hi fju2112-

I'm not familiar with the console switches on the face lifted W210's. As you can see, the trunk release on the '97 is separate from that switch cluster for the windows & mirrors pictured above. But I believe the removal of the wood trimmed switch plate cover is the same on all W210's. In my experience, switches, whether electrical or audio, don't "break" in a mechanical sense, as much as they just get "dirty." So see if you can remove that switch and carefully unsnap it apart to clean the contacts inside. It's usually dirt, corrosion or a copper contact that just needs a little "bend" to get things back to working order. With switches that are snapped together, its always best to have super glue ready to put them back together.

hey mark - that's actually a great idea...given it doesn't appear to be a PSE hose issue and the light still lights up when the trunk is open, that's likely what it is. I'll get on that; I have removed the switch panel before to get the part #, but didn't think to clean it - should have! Thank you!

w210 mirror fix

Great writeup. My mirrors became loose after some autobody work. They must have tried to remove the covers for a paint touch up job and brooke the spring hooks. I used zip ties to secure my springs.

Had FMS (Floppy Mirror Syndrome) after body work on door last year. The shop had managed to break the spring hook.

The fix - Removed the spring completely, and softened the metal with a torch to red hot, then quickly bent in a new hook with large needle nosed pliers. Took about three heat and bend cycles to complete the bend. After cooling, used zip tie like shown above because the spring was shorter.
