1997 E420 Ticking noise from engine

I'm having a ticking noise coming from my engine,(tick tick tick)(about 3 ticks a second) that at times gets very loud and gets faster when I rev the engine. I initially thought it was a valve lifter so I put in some valve medic in my oil but it did not work. The Car has 109,000 on it and I recently bought the car around 8k ago and believe it was using synthetic oil, when I bought it I switched to regular... Some one told me that could be the problem so I may try to switch back to synthetic? Any comments? Thanks

Ty, I think I'd try the synthetic route. If it's really a lifter that's failing (which sounds reasonable given your description) then additives are unlikely to do very much for it. Hopefully the synthetic will clear it up, if not I'd have a mechanic listen to it and give you a diagnosis.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

You may have some clogged cam oilers. These are small plastic tubes that help lubricate your valve lifters. They are easy to replace once you have the valve cover out.

i have experienced this one and the camshaft adjustment variable solenoid valve is causing it. try to disconnect the the connector from it. if this doesn't eliminate the noise it could be the valve trains or the lifters.

I just purchased a 1997 E420 and have the same issue. I am going to switch to 0W 40 Mobile 1 Synthetic oil and was going to remove the valve covers to check out the oil tubes.

You mentioned the camshaft adjustment variable solenoid valve but I do not know where that is located. Can you assist? I have looked for a repair manual but can not find one. Any help would be appreciated.

You have the hobgoblin

of the M119 orphan engine.
The oil guide tubes are gone.
Look at the diy on PeachParts - Mercedes Parts & Tech Info resource section diy articles
get the guides follow the directions. No more ticking issues. It is not a solenoid or a lifter or any of the other imagined ills.
Heavier viscosity oil will not solve it and will lead to other issues you really don't wish to encounter .
The new aluminum guides are on the market so probably a good idea to upgrade as they will last forever.

Old topic... sorry I don't get on here very often.

I too am having this problem. Stupid me I have been going to jiffy lube where they were putting Castrol in it. I guess thats what happens when you take the cheap rout...

anyway you guys had mentioned changing the oil tubes? My dealer told me that was possibly the problem but they wanted $1500 to fix it. Some one earlier mentioned they are easy to remove once you have the cover off? Any one willing to explain how to do it. I would love to get rid of this noise without paying $1500.

Thanks a lot,
Mike
