reserve fuel

I have the exact same problem with a ML 350, I guess it is a protection for the fuel pump,

I suggest using the trip odometer as a secondary fuel gauge.

Reset the trip odometer when fueling up a full tank. Drive 400 miles. Repeat.

I have driven about 20 miles from when the fuel light turned on in my Benz several times.

Its a lot more helpful to readers if you fill out your profile to include your vehicle model and year, or at the very least include it in your post.
Me I get somewhere around 65 miles remaining when my warning lite come on.

Thanks and updated.

The info I posted is specific to W204 - as I run a 2014 C300 Sport, 73K miles to date.

Please note - the odometer point will work with any MB.

I've found that when my light comes on I still have 3 gallons, not 2, which surprised me as I was accustomed to 2 in my W203. But according to the specs I have a 17-gallon tank, and I've never been able to add more than 14 on an immediate refill.

I think I've gone at least 40 highway miles on the light, but I'm not sure how far I can push it, so I usually don't wait too long. I really don't trust traffic around here enough to run it down the way I used to.

(2014 C300 Sport 4MATIC. I'm at somewhere around 65K, I think.)

My W209 CLK's light used to come on with 8 liters (2.11 gallons) left as indicated by the dash. Haven't tested it with the C300 yet.

I think I can top everyone here and say that I've definitely went to '0 miles to empty' many times...usually gauge it to get to a gas station within 1/2 mile of the zero mark. I'm willing to bet that you're either noticing it late, your kids/others are driving your car, or you have a mechanical problem. I can easily get 30 miles after the light in commuting (half freeway, half stop and go).

As far as the 'why' which some ask, I live in California with that craptastic ethanol forced down our injectors. I used to never let it get past 1/2 or 1/3 empty but with both cars, I've gotten tired of the error codes from the corn in my petrol. That and probably whatever additives (seasonal and non-seasonal) are required.

Former MB: "Miss Juliana" - 1972 280SEL 4.5
Current MB: 2013 C250

I agree with the ethanol comment. I am lucky enough to have Stewarts ethanol free 91 octane available around me. That is all I run in my Benz and all of my home machine (riding mower, snowblower, motorcycle, etc)

The only engine in my household that is run on unleaded with ethanol is my wife’s Toyota Sienna - as that vehicle just does not care what you put in it!

I hate ethanol. It's caused me as much as a 20 percent drop in mpg. And I worry that E15 is going to be imposed on us.

Was thinking about this discussion last night on my way home, and then the light came on literally as I pulled into my parking space. I bought gas this morning; the station is 1.5 miles from my house. The pump cut off at 13.958 gals. As I've mentioned previously, according to the manual specs, I have a 17-gal tank, so that's a 3-gal cushion. On a good day that would be enough for me to do at least two round-trip commutes, but I cannot take that chance given the midday roadwork that totally screws up traffic.
