Smile Smart Key Replacement shell - it's so easy

Problem was the membrane on the key for my W203 was breaking up but its the same key on many MB models.
£200 for a new MB one or DIY was the dilemma.
Tried my luck and bought a virtually new fob from eBay for £11.00 including postage.
Decided to swap the electronics from duff key to replacement which took exactly 30 seconds and I have not done this before.
All you need is a lipped small screwdriver as found in those "sets of small tools" many DIY stores for working on mobile phones etc.
Process is take out the battery section of the key.
Push in your lipped screw driver as shown in the picture and using only moderate pressure to push back the white tab on the white plastic locking spacer just pull and out comes the whole PCB.
Do the same on your original key and push into replacement key and battery and off you go.
No programming, no expensive trip to a MB dealer.
Pictures explain it visually.

Note that the chrome key on a W204 is different (not a lot though).

Reviving an old thread....

So how different are the instructions for the chromed key?

I'm trying to do the same for a W164 key that has a cracked shell. The picture below found online indicates it can be done...but it doesn't have the same white tab mentioned above. Help is appreciated.

shell replacement

hi,
looking at the picture I would pull out the battery using the sliding tab.
Then gentle pull on the printed circuit board using some tweezers or thin long nose pliers using the edge of the board to grip on.
If it does not pull out easy the board will be held and located on some plastics lugs on the shell and you have to push in (gently) a fine screwdriver to flex the board off the lugs whilst pulling with the tweezers/pliers.
Just go about it gently but a second pair of hands or a small clamp/vise to hold the shell is a good starting point.
Putting it back together is easy as it just a push fit after lining up the PCB.

Nice to see the OP of this thread coming back. I agree completely with the above. The main difference with the older black key and the chrome key is that the battery is released by pushing the lever to a different direction but this is explained in the car manual too.

Perhaps spielnicht got confused when the photo showed the "wrong side" of the circuit board.

Thanks guys! Yea, the chrome version turned out to be the same procedure. There was a white tab as well, just not shown in the pic above. I just used small needle nose pliers and PCB came out effortlessly and now I have a new [already programmed] key :-)

Thanks again for the quick reply.

I have the w204 key that came with my car. The oval with the soft buttons. But the buttons on my main key has cracked and look like crap. Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase a new shell and swap the guts. I saw how you got the guts out of the old style w203 key, but not how you opened up the w204 key...

Also, I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade to the new 2010/2011 key design where it is more square and bulky and has actual hard buttons (to stop the cracking that mine has encountered).

Any advise would be appreciated!
