Post Universal Media Interface or Nav for C-Class w/out Multimedia Available Soon

From Mercedes-Benz USA, if you didn't get the multimedia package in your C Class (or your pre-ordered GLK) and you would like to have navigation on your existing screen, this is the solution:

Quote:
The new Universal Media Interface (UMI) is a Navigation and Media Interface System solution that can be retrofitted at the dealership into all MY08 and MY09 C-Class vehicles and MY10 GLK-Class vehicles with entry Head Units.

UMI is a multifunctional navigation and entertainment center available as an upgrade for the Standard Audio System for any MY08 and MY09 C-Class and MY10 GLK-Class vehicle. Together UMI's map navigation and in-vehicle music integration allows you to keep your finger on the pulse of what drives you. All accessed simply and conveniently through integrated steering wheel controls or on the center console. The UMI also provides FREE Lifetime Real-Time Traffic assistance with automatic rerouting to help you avoid delays and frustrations on the road. The Universal Media Interface - tune in to what drives you.

PRE-ORDER: UMI is available for preorder starting October 17th through October 28th for the W204 C-Class and GLK-Class vehicles. Parts will start shipping early November.
Part No. A204 870 5996
Retail: $1,650.00

Hope this helps,

AZ.Benz

Any idea what it will take to install? It looks great and is there any way that we could get some information on the UMI?

The kit has been on sale for a while in Europe but I have not been able to get any feedback from owners who have had the kit installed or even from the seller here who actively contributes on the UK forum:
Comand Online Ltd :: Navigation and Audio units :: Universal Media Interface (UMI) with Navigation for new C class & GLK

The part numbers given for Europe seem to be different but none appears at EPC, makes be wonder what is the actual status.

I'd be interested seeing how the navigation data updates are delivered. Updating is supposed to work through a USB stick, I guess this one needs to be big enough to handle data from a DL DVD? So far I have not seen update DVDs mentioned for this device.

Another one is the version coding to make the cluster display show navigation arrows and other navi info. Since the W204 cluster is SCN-coded, this "plug-and-play" installation appears to include a lot of "play", in addition to SDS coding, the data card would have to be modified to get the correct SCN info. Or is there a shortcut?

The traffic info is coming from the FM radio, RDS in Europe, an equivalent in the US. I don't see how this could be used without a navigation device.

This looks promising. I specifically did not want the MM option as I don't appreciate the pop-up screen. I can live with the smaller in-dash display.

Also... If we order the European version do we get the chick with the sexy British accent like on the old Comand?

I looked into this today. David Morris Fine Cars in Edmonton, AB Canada replied with the following:

"We are going to contact Mercedes-Benz in Toronto and find out what is involved in installing this kit and what is in the kit. The price for the kit is $1995.00. I will let you know once I have more information."

I will post what he has to say when I get it. Sounds promising.
