Cannot open 2005 C180 KOMPRESSOR Stationwagon

Hi there! I bought a second hand 2005 C180 KOMPRESSOR Stationwagon.
I noticed recently that when trying to unlock the car it didn't open right away.
I changed the battery and still had the same problem.
Now I can't open the car at all. I even changed the battery again. I have checked with a camera to see if there is an infrared signal so it appears as though my key fob is still working.
I tried to open the car with the key but it looks like the key is just a generic replacement (see attached picture).
I have tried placing the key fob right up to the drivers door handle and it still doesn't work!
Does anybody have any suggestions for me - preferably not expensive ones as I am broke at the moment?

Welcome to the forum! Please take a moment to visit the User Control Panel and update your profile to include your car model and year, and your location (at least country). This information will then appear below your name and avatar on the left side panel next to each post you make. This will greatly help others to give you better information. If you are using the mobile version of the site, you will need to switch to the "full" version to get to the User Control Panel.

Your key communicates with the car via two methods: RF and IR. It sounds like both are malfunctioning, and it's probably not the SmartKey. First, check fuse 8 (rear panel in the trunk). That controls the RF receiver in the car. If if is blown and continues to blow, you have a bad alarm siren module that will either need to be replaced or disconnected. Aiming the key at the door handle uses the IR system and that can act as a backup to the RF receiver, but often the IR receiver in the door handle fails.
