2001 C320 No crank

Hello all
If anyone has some time I could use some clarity on this issue. The MB is a 2001 c320 with 175000 miles.
When the key switch is turned to crank the relays in the start circuit can be heard clicking but the starter will not engage
I have replaced the battery, starter and starter relay.
I can start the car using a jumper wire from the solenoid to the positive cable on the battery
When started the transmission will not shift out of park, I have removed the shift lock mechanism but the gear indicator does not move in the instrument cluster
Scanning -the first code I get is P0600-CAN message from ABC control unit
Is that just a result of the problem and not a cause?
I can drive it but the transmission will not shift.
I’m new to the MB DYI life so any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you

Welcome to the forum! Please take a moment to visit the User Control Panel and update your profile to include your car model and year, and your location (at least country). This information will then appear below your name and avatar on the left side panel next to each post you make. This will greatly help others to give you better information. If you are using the mobile version of the site, you will need to switch to the "full" version to get to the User Control Panel.

P0600 is a generic OBDII code that represents four different MBZ-specific DTCs If you are going to DIY, you need to get a scan tool that can read MBZ systems. Two of the P0600 codes are related to communication issues with the shifter module. It may be defective and not letting the ECU know that it is in ark and therefore it will not allow the starter to engage.
