Which engines can be swapped in place of 3.0L for 2006 C280

I need to R&R the original engine on my C280. There is an SLK 3.0 which I found, but need to know if it is a usable replacement, and if I can upgrade to 3.5L. Does anyone know if I can use original ECU, or if I will need the one attached to the replacement engine?

Th ECU is programmable via SDS in developer mode. You'll need to keep yours ECU. The problem you'll run into is that they use different transmissions, likely with difference gear ratios. Your C280's transmission may work with the 3.5l, but it might not.

Are you trying to replace an engine with a balance shaft failure? Any 3L m272 will work as long as the engine number is outside the affected range.

Mine has bent valve on #5 and exhaust cam on Bank 1 is NOT centered within inspection hole. I'd rather find one which is timed properly, though i know the SLKs engine is probably in the affected range based on year of manufacture.

I asked seller for photos to demonstrate the basic cam position is correct, and it appears to be from photos. $1125 shipped. I intend to upgrade the intake flaw with upgraded parts. That seems to be what may have failed on my 280 causing the bent valve.

Personally I would get a 3.5L from an 08-09 W211. Should be drop in.

Don't worry about the wiring harness part numbers - the next to the last set of digits are just version numbers in this case.

If you do get an engine in the balance shaft failure range, I;d go ahead and replace the balance shaft while you have it out of the car. 85% of the work is pulling the engine.

I wanted to avoid doing the balance shaft if possible, because then I might as well rebuild the original engine from the 280. Also, will the 722.6 transmission work with the 3.5? One poster in reply to my thread said it might work, but also might not. I don't want to run into additional problems. Can someone tell me where the access hole to remove the bolts from engine to TQ converter is? I haven't gotten under the car yet, and wanted to have an idea of where the access is. Looks like a pair of bolts in three locations 60degs apart from each other.

Some of the w211's came with 3.5 and a 5 speed auto. Can't see there be an issue bolting it up. Sucks to have valve issues, but def an interesting build if you get it done though.
