C320 Engine compatabilty

I have a 2004 C320 4matic and am considering an engine replacement. This would be from a working vehicle with the same engine (3.2l V6, 4matic) but possibly different year or body style. I would use the accessories from my engine.

In general, are there any snags I should look out for?
Where could I find out if the engine from car "A" would fit in my car?

Thanks.

So you are replacing both the engine and transmission? These are specific to the C320 4MATIC. My advice is to find another C320 4MATIC from a crash with severe body damage, but a good drivetrain.

Get a 3.7 from an ML350.

A little explanation...

Rodney,

Yes I am thinking of replacing both engine and transmission. The trans needs to be fixed now and the 190k motor runs fine, but is very noisy and uses oil. At this point I not sure I want to fix the trans without knowing I can take care of the engine if it goes in a year. So I am looking at driveable wrecks with relatively low mileage. If I go this route, I would buy the car and install the trans now, and keep the engine to install later. This option costs a bit less than a low mileage trans shipped from some full service junkyard.

Question More questions

First, thank you for the advice. However, I am still not understanding these engines.

Do we know if the 3.7l has the same motor mounts, machining for AC brakets, and a thousand other things that bolt onto the engine?

Even if all the accessories move over, wouldn't I need to reprogram the ECU with an SDS?

Have you done such a swap, or do you know if if can be done?

What about this combination is specific to the C320 4matic?

I understand that an E320 RWD might have a different ECU and cam for example, and that the emissions equipment on a 2004 would be different from a 1998 3.2l. But even so, shouldn't I be able to bolt the 1998 3.2l engine into the 2004 car?

Thanks,

Steven

The 3.7 is externally the same to your 3.2. you will have to swap over your oil pan, engine mount arms and accessories. All the hardpoints on the engine are identical. Your existing ECU will adopt the extra displacement. For all intents and purposes it's the exact same m112 engine with a larger cylinder bore.

MB made some improvements on the M112 in 2002 and again in 04. Larger oil galleries, better castings. I would get the newest engine possible. Yes a 98 engine will drop right in and work but I wouldn't choose that route.

It concerns me that you haven’t referred to the engine by it’s M112 designation as tjts1 did. Since you have a core engine, anything you need to make another 3.2 M112 work is at hand. I don’t know what it takes to swap an M112 of a different displacement.

With prices of these cars dropping, I wonder if your plan is cost effective. Or have I said that already?
