Why do I need this Part? (Evap Harness)

I was in the process of replacing the Evaporative Canister Shutoff Valve (I was getting a P0446 DTC and the valve tested bad) on my '02 C320 and noticed that the car's wiring harness was not plugged directly into the valve, but rather plugged into a harness extender, that THEN plugged into the valve.

What caught my attention was the fact that the adapter had dates on it 11.08.09, and 04/11/09 in those formats in different places on the MB parts tag, indicating it had been installed 7 years AFTER the car was manufactured.

I looked up the Part # on harness extension and only got a bunch of Russian MB Parts sites, one of which listed the part as "A2114400134 WIRING HARNESS SHUTOFF VALVE ADAPTER LINE" Makes me wonder why I need an "Adapter" if I have the proper part for my car in the first place?

Was there a recall, or tech bulletin that included this part as a retrofit? The wiring harness has a different plug than the Evap Valve (so the car's wiring harness plug will not plug directly into the valve's socket), making me wonder if my car even had the proper valve installed (maybe why it failed in under 2 years?) when I opened up the fender liner.

Here is a photo link showing the adapter cable:2011-09-03_1531 - bobinyelm's library

Any information appreciated. Maybe the problem with my Evaporative System is due to a mismatch of parts? I don't have access to a MB Parts List for my car. Perhpas someone with access to one could see if the part below shown in BROWN is the right part for my car?

This is a picture of the valve actually removed from my car: http://screencast.com/t/0xQf5v78Ur .
It may or may not be the original part due to the fact it was plugged into the car via the adapter cable. Note that the barbed fitting had NO hose connected to it, and it was just vented to the area under the RR Fender Liner, which seemed a little strange to me.

I know when I bought the new valve, the MB Parts Dept said I could only buy the Valve as a part of the complete Canister Assembly ($550), but promptly brought me just the valve ($220) when I gave them the MB Part # A0004707193 stamped on the valve I removed from the car. Maybe that's NOT the proper valve for my '02 C320 Wagon since it only plugs in w/ the adapter cable shown?

I don't want to plug the new valve in until I know it's the right one for my year/model and possibly lose the ability to return it in case it turns out to be the wrong part.

Thanks,
Bob

Went to the dealer, and the parts guy reluctantly went to his ONLINE parts catalog and found that there was a revision to the original part, and to make it work with our cars, we NEED the adapter cable I showed.

The part number of the valve I showed is the CORRECT one for the W203, whereas if you have an old catalog it will NOT show this part (which is why the first time I went in, they told me I had to buy the $550 canister WITH the valve), but teh valve IS available by itself. PHEW!!
