Type of Glue to Install Trunk Letters

I took the C280 letters off the trunk lid for a paint job. What glue to use for reinstall?

Leave them off

Use double sided foam tape (3M) if you must.

I agree. The double side tape is the best way, especially if you may need to remove them again without damaging the paint. Any of the other glues (like 3m plastic and emblem adhesive) is a more permanent glue that will damage the paint and is a pain to clean if you make a mess.

The trick to making the double sided tape work is you must have a 100% clean surface. So on your old emblem, make sure you remove all the bits of old tape AND whatever glue residue is behind. Go to a parts store that sells automotive products and get some 3m general purpose adhesive cleaner to soak the emblems in overnight, and the glue and tape will come off easily.

I used 3m tape to attach some letters to my Harley tourpack. It was about 8 years ago and the letters are still there.
What I got it wasn't really a double-sided tape but rather some glue on the surface over plastic liner. It comes in a roll just like Double sided Tape and is about quarter inch wide and it's a red color. I was looking for product that is not too thick and I can tell that this tape is very very thin but the quality of the grip is really good. I've looked at different products and they all are based on the tape that is a little bit foamy and then applied glue on both sides. I didn't like that because it would make the letters sit far away from the painted surface.
Look in any automotive stores for that tape. I think it's specifically designed for this purpose

It's call 3M VHB tape. The bond on this tape actually gets stronger with time. It may not work well for the letters on the trunk. It's too thin to fill the void behind the letters.

EDIT: Sorry for the out off focus picture............
