Post Glove compartment door refuses to close

After taking out and cleaning the cabin air filter under the glove comparment, which all went fine, suddenly the door of the glove compartment will not close anymore. It always worked fine before.
I suspect there is a cable connected to the central locking mechanism that has snapped off or got stuck.
Anybody ever experienced this or knows how to fix it?

your glovebox is nothing to do with your cental locking tho, try adjusting the 2 rubber stoppers at the top left and right corners, chances are their 2 far out, i had that when i took the glovebox out to route my ipod into it, either that or your lock's shot

The rubber stoppers should be fine, because I didn't touch them at all... It all worked fine. From one moment to the other it stopped locking.
Maybe the actual lock (at the top middle of the cover) is shut in a locked position and doesn't release anymore.
I see a little metal click thing moving inside the lock when I pull the handle that opens the glovecompartment, but it only move a millimeter or 2.
The lock itself can be pressed in about 5 mm and springs back again.

I pushed it hard enough, it's not locked either....
I took a closeup of the lock:

Can you see if it looks the same with you?

Always nice to be able to compare things with the 'old situation'

Thanks davo!

If the lock mechanism is working fine, the next thing is that these get misaligned over time and then the latch will not work correctly. I believe there are some screws that will let you adjust the lock's position or maybe you adjust the position of the hook/catch instead of the lock. It has been too long for me to remember for sure.

Problem solved. I screwed open the glove compartment door just enough to pry it open a little bit and noticed that the lock mechanism inside the door came loose from 1 of it's 2 retainers.
In the picture http://85.144.203.14/lock2.jpg I indicated in red the free play that was not supposed to be there. As they are plastic parts, a drop of plastic glue should do the job.
I noticed that both hinges can be easily aligned when you pull out the 2 square plastic covers with the tip of a screwdriver. Inserting the little blocks back into position will freeze the alignment of the door.

I used to have a similar problem. It turns out that a piece of plastic inside of the door had snapped. I opened it up and was able to create sort-of a "splint" for it. It's been working fine ever since. I don't have pictures unfortunately. Open up the door and look around very carefully. The locking mechanism is very picky and even a slight misalignment can prevent it from working properly.

thread revival!

as w202's age this becomes a bigger and bigger problem. bumping this thread for brevity.

having this issue with both my C43's and it's driving me insane. The one I drove today keeps dropping open every time I hit a bump, but nothing is broken or misaligned as far as I can tell. UGH.
