sorry to hear that so it quit while driving? if so then check your main engine ground because that could give you both a no start and stalling. keep us posted

My feeling is just that. It may be simply a bad ground or a dead battery since all the symptoms seem to indicate that. I will post my findings once I drag the old gal home. I wish my old man was around at times like this.

easy way to check your ground is to run a wire from engine block to the negative on the battery

Well car I sold home and it started without a boost but when it arrived home it wouldn't start again. I checked the battery and it was dead. The charging light does come on when the ignition is on so maybe I missed it if the alternator is not working. Once I get the battery charged I will check the charge voltage and clean all the terminals. Sorry for making such a fuss about a dead battery.

An aging battery will throw you for a loop every time.

I had a similar issue and neglected to remember my battery was already 8 years old! Well beyond their normal life cycle, especially here in Texas.

Not uncommon for even a new battery to have a dead cell. It sometimes just happens.

When not starting in P, did you try in 'N' yet? If handbrake interferes, block the wheels if not on even ground.
Another thing to look out for are fully or partially 'corroded' ground cables (often woven or stranded) from the battery. You usually see a bit of white residue (an old on the road trick was to pour coca cola over the cable. The acid eats away tha corrosion, but it will look quite messy).
Before buying a new starter, check whether the voltage is within prescribed parameters. Frequently a new voltage regulator is the culprit and much cheaper.
The link to the Mercedes factory manual should be in the stickies on top.
Daimler Benz made different spec versions of same model/chassis cars for different parts of the world. So, to get the correct advice on an international forum, location can be important.
Please click 'User CP' and complete your profile with at least a general location.

If you are suspecting electrical system issues (battery/alternator/regulator/harness grounding/etc.) I would strongly advise buying a USB charger with a built in voltmeter and sticking it in the cigarette lighter at all times. Only a $10 investment and can save you hours of grief and diagnostics. Also if you start having aging components noted above you will see signs well in advance. It even flashes at you if the voltage drops dangerously low while driving.

NO START ?

On my old W123, I had a problem develop where I could bump the ignition key and the switch would turn ever so slightly in the off direction. This would result in weird dim warning lights as mentioned. (Something to look at, above ground)...

(Also remembered the alternator didnít seem to be running in this slightly off position as well so thought Iíd mention it)...
