Wheel bolts

My recently purchased ML came complete with gutter rash on all four rims. I had the wheels refinished and was very happy with the result. What I didn't like was the wheel bolts.

These have a chrome cap over the end of an E22 bolt. You have to use a 17mm socket to loosen the bolt. Two of the caps came off the bolts when I took the wheels off. I glued the caps back on, but a further three caps came off when I put the wheels back on. The problem, as I see it, is if a cap comes off during use, the supplied 17mm wheel spanner won't fit the wheel nut if you need to fit the spare wheel after a flat tyre. You would need to carry either a 16mm or E22 socket in order to remove the bolt. Is this type of bolt common on the W166? (My car is fitted with 21" AMG style wheels so maybe they are unique to them.) I'm not sure whether to try and source a replacement set of bolts without caps or just carry some addition tools. It seems to be a poor design to me. I don't know why mercedes didn't just chrome the bolts and forget about the the caps altogether.

Here is a pic of one of the refurbed wheels with the capped wheel bolts.

Wheel bolts

Itís actually a special socket for the wheel nuts. I had to get one from snap on as well as a special spark plug socket.

A 17mm will fit it but not great.
Your wheels cam up beautiful.

Thanks Matt,

Great info.

I couldn't find the socket on the Australian Snap On site but found the equivalent on Amazon. Different manufacturer but same socket. They call it a flower head. I'll keep gluing on the caps as they fall off but will keep an E22 socket handy just in case I lose a cap.
