Rear Shock part numbers

Hi Guys,

I bought a 2014 350ML Bluetec last week (70K kms) with airmatic. (I'm new to the W166 but have had (still have) a 99 W163 for 10 years.) I haven't worked out all the gadgets yet, but am warming to the distronics. I'm still wondering whether all the bells and whistles on the car will be a blessing or a curse. I guess time will tell.

A pre-purchase inspection revealed a leaking rear shock absorber so I ordered a new one from Amazon Australia. The OEM part number I ordered was A1663200130 but the delivered part was Genuine Mercedes A1643200631. I queried the seller who said that the supplied part would fit. I notice that this part is also listed by other suppliers as suitable for both models. Does anyone know what the difference is between the two parts. They look the same except for a slight difference in the cuff.

Thanks

Itís quite possible the part has been upgraded and the part number has been changed.

Thanks Matt. The dealer quote for one shock was $1516.16. They offered to fit it for free as they they missed the leak during their $300 120 point pre-purchase check. (The problem was subsequently picked up when the roadworthy was done the next day.)

The 164 shock was only $440 so not a big outlay. I think that I'll probably fit it and see how it goes. Not sure yet whether to do the job myself. My WIS doesn't know about 166's so will have to figure out what is involved.

It's interesting when I swap between driving the 163 and 166. I still really like the 163 when I drive it and like the 166 when I drive that. They are different beasts in all respects and I like them both. It doesn't seem right that you can buy a half decent 320ML for the cost of two shocks for the 166.

Hahaha yer never thought about it like that. I love driving the 166 and wouldnít go back, been spoilt I think. I will say though the old 55 was so much better on the dirt roads. I could drive that thing like a WRX on the dirt where the 166 feels very unsure on the dirt at speed. Everywhere else itís pretty good though.
