W166 Navigation Update

I found this site, looks like I can update the NAV maps on my '12 ML350 for about $130USD. Just wondering if there are any other options?

Waze on your smartphone doesn't integrate into the rest of the vehicle, though.

"Engineered like no other car in the world." That's both a bug and a feature.

It sure doesn't. No interest in Waze. Just want my maps updated for a fair price. Could always get the file and code for my BMW's for $50 so was hoping to do better than $130 but if not, it's still better than the dealer price

Tell me about it. Yours is early enough that you don't have to have the dealer install it, unlike mine....it would have cost me $195 to get mine updated last Saturday except that the update requires someone with manager level access to the parts database, and exactly zero of the three such people at this dealer were working that day. 250-mile round trip for nothing.

I went back this afternoon and got it done. They did the labor at no charge due to last week's screwup, so it only cost me $106 with tax.

Already worth it: it's not complaining any more about my home being in an area with limited navigation data and it can't provide turn by turn guidance in that area.

While I was there, a nice young saleslady tried hard to get me to trade it in on a later model GLC300 or a current GLC350e, but I'm not ready to switch yet...and the GLC won't make 750 miles on a tank of gas. If they offered it in a diesel, I'd have considered it.

Define integrate into the vehicle. It plays the navigation queues over BT and has up to the minute traffic updates. That's vastly superior to having roads show up in COMAND

Already worth it? You guys are paying hundreds of dollars for nav updates for a system that is almost 10 years old. The rest of the world has embraced free navigation apps and now most cars are coming with Android Auto or Carplay. It sucks the W166's pre-GLE facelieft can't handle this, but you gotta get with the times. Case in point, the update you just paid for at the dealer is already out of date, sadly.

One minor example: I was surprised the other day when i got a low fuel light, and COMAND offered to search for nearby gas stations. That's the kind of integration I'm talking about, where the navigation function knows more about the car than just where you are and the car knows about the navigation functions. There's also the major factor of having all of the car's built-in controls - steering wheel, for example - operate the system.

And my nav system has up-to-the-minute traffic updates, as well, via SiriusXM - which I'm paying for anyway, and would regardless of that feature. (I was one of the first 25,000 XM Satellite Radio customers, having gotten it in the fall of 2001.) It will dynamically compute a reroute around traffic, either automatically or after getting permission.

When I tried Waze, I found it unreliable and irritating to use. I quickly went back to the nav system. (This was in an earlier vehicle with an aftermarket stereo - with a Garmin GPS as part of the system.)

Yeah, it costs me money for an update. Its worth it to me not to have to fiddle with the phone while driving...and that's now illegal in Minnesota, where I live. Operating a vehicle's navigation system is not.

Got it. Well in LA, the traffic function is useless on the nav. Glad it works for your purpose. It would be worth it to play around with Waze a bit more. It's fan more intuitive than you may have seen from your first couple of uses.

You can have 1 touch "to work", or "to home". And depending on the time of day I get in my truck and fire it up, it automatically knows I'm either going to work or home. It will tell you how long you'll be in traffic, accidents, police, objects in road based off of real time user input. It also learns your driving patterns, and will navigate you down preferred streets etc. There's so much it can do, it is worth another look-sy.

But then again, in Minnesota, most of the heavy city centric uses I love about it may be moot for you.
