ML270CDI - when in drive coming to a stop have to brake hard to stop lunging forward
Well my 2004 ML270CID has been quite a saga! lol
After going to a few mechanics who just told me to scrap it, I bit the bullet and took to Merc.
The car was overheating, blowing black smoke and when in drive and coming to a stop, it creaked and I have to put my foot hard on the brake to stop lunging forward.
This is the report from Merc..
Customer reports vehicle is blowing black smoke.
When at idle-vehicle feels like it wants to lunge forward.
Vehicle overheats at times.

Carried out road test and confirmed excessive black smoke
from exhaust, engine appears to be in Iimp mode
(significant lack of power), coolant light on and glow plug
warning on. Engine failed to reach operating temp and Trans feels like it isn't disengaging properly.
charger and Xentry, carried out quick test. -Faults stored-.
P1636 Electric fan open circuit.
P1481 Glow plug failure cylinder 5.
Checked Tips document C11 09.20-P-004096 relating to symptoms
which indicated possible faulty inlet port actuator motor.
Checked fuses all ok. Checked connection at control unit ok.
Sublet to diesel engine specialist for second opinion.
Faults for electric fan and glow plug cylinder s
Removed all 5 glow plugs, several were seized and took
additional time to remove.
Tested No. 5 and confirmed faulty. supplied new set.
Removed injectors. Placed tested in each cylinder and
cranked engine to get reading.
Results. (1.) -330 (2)-300 93) 330 (4) ?340 (5) 320. Good.
Refitted all parts including new set of glow plugs.
Tested thermo fan mop. confirmed due to fault in thermo
fan/controller. Suggest replace Thermo fan and controller
Also suspect internal transmission failure, refer to trans

Investigated possible trans fault. Accessed trans control
module. Checked internal resistance of Torque converter
Iock up clutch solenoid circuit 2.7 0hms (within spec).
output signal to solenoid and confirmed pulsing, placed vehicle on hoist and removed pan to drain fluid.
Found fluid to be badly burned, smelling of burned clutch and
traces of metal-evident. Suspect TCC is seized in engaged
position, requireds removal and disassembly to inspect.
Refit all parts and added 3.5 Ltr new fluid.
Recommended course of action would be to replace the
electric fan and controller then reassess for likely
fault with inlet port actuator motor.
Sorry this is so long but want to give all the information, I had asked Merc about the Glow plug warning light at last service and they said it was fine!! it wasn't it was a warning light!
Anyway the car is now not blowing black smoke, my husband put a new thermostat in and now its getting to temp fine, its not overheated either, but the coolant warning light is still on.
The car is still going the lunging thing.
My husband also service the EGR and needs to unclog the inlet manifold.
What are peoples thoughts on the coolent light and this wanting to lunge thing, it is also losing power sometimes, but rare now...
