Thoughts on 2010 ML350 BlueTec 140k miles

Hi, I am a W220 owner (self maintainer) and have found the W220 a very good vehicle if one keeps up on the maintenance and common failure items (airmatic, etc).

I have been transferred to Salt Lake City, and commute about 100 miles round trip per day. My drive to work is through the mountains with lots of grades and turns. Doing some research, discovered the Ml350 blutecs are low priced and ample availability used. The fuel mileage looks pretty good.

I found a one owner 2010 ML350 Bluetec with 140k miles for $7500. I do not have the maintance records.

Looking for thoughts on the Ml350 Bluetec as a 100 mile per day daily drive through the mountains. Dependability is my number one concern. Please note I do have a clone STAR SDS system, but do not have a location to do major work.

From what I have read, the BlueTec engine may be a high risk, engine failure from sludging oil, oil leaks, etc. What I don't know if these are remote failures or highly likely to happen.

You've hit a couple major issues.

If it doesn't leak oil you can probably assume the oil cooler seals were replaced. It's not a terminal flaw, just expensive to fix. Ours was fixed at least twice by the first owner.

The sludge issue definitely has be concerned. I think the 10,000 mile oil change interval is too long, especially for a diesel that runs hot. Again I have records so I'm not freaking out. But I do plan to shorten my oil change intervals to closer to 5000 miles. I am also considering adding an oil catch can to keep oil out of the intake. And possibly blocking off the EGR.

Can you call the local dealers and ask about maintenence? If you can't find any maintenance history I would pass on this one.
