HELP !! 1998 multi CD Changer vrs. 2000 CD changer?

So far I have installed a 2000 MCS unit in my 1998 ML 320. My 1998 CD changer no longer works, so I bought a 2000 CD Changer (MB part# A 163 820 13 89) which from what I understand is partially Fiber Optic. I also know I need to install the 2000 wire harness in order for the 2000 CD Changer to work. However, I am looking at the 2000 CD Changer and I don't see a seperate Fiber Optic cable plug anywhere on the Multi CD Changer? Is there 1 that I just don't see or is it part of the harness?
Thanks,
Benza

So if I run a new wire harness, that would solve this problem?

Yes, you need to run a 2000 harness to get you CD..........

up and running again. Crazy isn't it. 98 & 99 wiring the same then some sort of change in 2000 and another change in 2001 plus 3 different CD changers. BTW, where did you get your MCS?

Re: Yes, you need to run a 2000 harness to get you CD..........

I just looked at the wire harness plug for the 1998 (it looks the same as the 2000) and plugged it in to the 2000 Multi CD Changer and it plugged right in. (of course it didn't work) But if the 2000 is not fiber optic, and the plug is the same I wonder if there is and adapter or maybe an adapter could be fabricated?
Any ideas?

Maybe you can just rewire the connectors in the existing harness to work properly. But ...

Maybe you can just rewire the connectors in the existing harness to work properly.

But you will have to find a pin-out diagram of the connectors.

That is what I was thinking. If anyone knows the correct pin diagram or where I can get it please let me know.
(William Monte) It is crazy RE: all the different CD Changer changes!! What was MB thinking[?]
By the way, I purchased the MCS unit on EBAY.

Not sure it's just wiring

There was a 3rd party adapter to allow you to hook up a <a href=http://http://www.keysolutions.com/M-Class.nsf/8178b1c14b1e9b6b8525624f0062fe9f/DD33E42A4F4D5DC2852565C500684D78>Panasonic CD changer</a> to 1998/1999 MLs. The adapter doesn't work w/ the 2000 model.

For 2001, you have to get a Becker optical CD changer.

Benza, It should work unless the plug on the back of MCS was not plug in? Can you eject the CD magazine? If both side are plug-in then the last thing you can do is recycle the MCS power( make sure you have the code). I can compare the wiring if you want.
