BAS/ESP electrical gremlins

My friend got a cheap ML320 with a burned exhaust valve, but at the time it had no electric/electronic problems. We swapped the engine with a lower mileage junkyard pull, and have had all kinds of electrical problems since. The car won't start in park, but will in neutral (mechanic traced it back and said the ECM thinks the car is in R when it's actually in P). It starts in N, so I'm not going to sweat this one for now. However, once we figured out it would start in N, now there are other faults. I picked up an iCarsoft MBII to read/reset DTCs, and here's the deal.

The BAS/ESP light is on, and the codes I get from the ESP are C1200 (Brake light switch S9/1) and P120008 (unknown.) I clear the codes, and the instant I press the brake pedal, the codes come back. Also, the brake lights do not come on. I replaced the BLS, no change. I tried disconnecting the rear lights, no change. I did not disconnect the third brake light, if there is one.

From the BAS computer, the code is C1025 (CAN signals.) When I clear that it comes back quickly.

There is probably more relevant information, but it's late and I'm pretty tired.

Thanks for any help you can provide in tracking this down.

Garage
Brake light switch is a known issue. Replace it. Under $20 from the dealer.

For no start in P check transmission shifter linkage. Most likely got out of wack during engine swap

Brake light switch is evaluated against booster travel sensor. NO and NC contacts must toggle. Look at live data in traction systems module.

I've already replaced the brake light switch. Here's what the live data stream shows:

When first turning the key to the on position, brake not depressed:
Stop lamp switch NO contact - OFF
Release switch NO contact - OFF
Release switch NC contact - ON

Depress brake:
Stop lamp switch NO contact - ON
Release switch NO contact - ON
Release switch NC contact - OFF

Release brake:
Stop lamp switch NO contact - ON
Release switch NO contact - OFF
Release switch NC contact - ON

Have you just changed the engine using your original harness? Or have you used the new engine harness from the donor car? If you have used the donor engine harness, which year ML was it from?

Interesting question. I used the harness from the donor, a 99.

I don't know your friends ML year, but that could be your problem.

It's a 2000, any idea what could have changed?

A lot of things. A 1999 harness will not work correctly on a 2000. Wiring is different. You should have used your original harness.
