Do I lay claim to the first W163 full length roof rack?

This is not a (for sale) ad

I've searched the entirety of the interwebs and come up with diddly for aftermarket full length ML roof racks. This was not the case with my 4Runners. There were a few options from big manufacturers who will remain unnamed but the build quality was lacking and the price was more than I payed for my ML! So a few years ago I got a small mig welder and tube bender and built my own rack to complete my 4Runner build and have a place to toss camping stuff when I had a truck full of occupants. I got an offer to sell it to another forum member so I did and I made a small profit. Then I built another with improved design and someone wanted that one too... you can see where this is going.

I am now owner/operator of Infidel Garage and we build a few custom pieces that ship nationwide. Right now I am 4Runner-less and found the ML430 for s hell of a bargain with alot of work required to get her in tip top shape again. It will never be a pretty Mercedes again but it will suffice as my platform to build custom W163 parts if there is a market. For now she is my daily and rather than pulling a trailer to get larger items such as metal or 4x8 sheets of anything, I can toss them on the roof. I can toss camping gear up there. Roof top tent. A chair to enjoy bird watching from a high vantage point... whatever.

Our prototype rack is complete and installed. It is level as the car sits now but with that, the factory stance of this thing has the nose tipping down quite a bit so when I end up doing the suspension lift and leveling the ride out, I may cut the front and middle legs to drop the front a bit.

Do you like it? Hate it? Let me know.

Here's an example of the racks we normally produce. The one on the ML is strictly for work. https://www.facebook.com/InfidelGara...type=3&theater

Would be great for camping. Personally If I was going to have a roof rack that size I would have some side rails about 3-4Ē high but thatís just me.
Does the mesh create a bit of noise at speed?

Ditto to the above.
Also powder coated in black.
If I were buying some thing like it I would want it to attach to original rails and remove/install quickly.

If it was a camping rack then yes, I'd have the upper rail as well but as it is specifically meant for picking up metal and other building materials. All my other racks have the upper rails.

The noise is not too bad. The ML is pretty well insulated. It's all about aerodynamics of specific vehicle. 3rd gen 4Runners also don't have too much noise but the 4th gens really need a wind deflector to tone it down.

As far as the coating goes... the underbody coating I used is garbage for roof racks. The ratchet strap hooks went right to bare metal. Once I get the rack exactly how I want it with no more welding needed, I'll get it powder coated. It's about $150 to get it blasted and coated.
