98 ML 320 Issues after Battery is replaced

Hello All,

I have a 1998 ML320 that is having some gremlins after i replaced the battery. Specifically, it is not running. It will start, for about a second, then die. I am wondering if the transponder in the steering column may have gone out? I am thinking this because its almost as if the car wants to run, but is being shut off. There aren't any trouble codes coming up and i am about 50 miles away from the nearest Mercedes mechanic that could take a look.

on a side note the key that came with the car had the top of another key taped to it. I am guessing that was due to the cost of getting a chipped key programmed to the vehicle, by the original owners.I have been using it like that for a few months and was thinking about replacing the key before the transponder switch, except i think the switch is cheaper.

Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have Start Error coming up in the cluster odometer.
Sounds like the key is not being read by the key sinc ring around the ignition. Youíll need to order a Mickey Mouse valet key.

"Start Error" on odometer does not come into play until model 2001. Only indication of key not being recognized is no LED blink from ATA indicator.

So, in your case what has triggered this error?

When I was fitting the keyless go and I didnít have the chip close enough to the ring.
I ended up taping and gluing it to the outside of the ring after I pulled it out of the key fob.

In OP case it is not what happened after battery replacement. It is what has happened before.

An attempt was made to start the car, battery died in the process. An incomplete new code was written to the key. Now there is a mismatch between the key and immobilizer.

So from what you're saying, neither replacing the key, nor replacing the ring would help. What solution is there to be had?
