New oem Key Fobs in production - evidence?

So I was at Classic Mercedes Benz in Tyler yesterday, ordered us 2 more 'Secondary / Valet' keys.

$45 ea - 2 days lead time.

Our plan is Dear wife & I will each use this physical key daily & bank our 2 rare, operational Key Fob remotes.

So parts guy heard this & replied that earlier a day or two, he'd been talking with their "internal parts support" and learned they just had a conference call about contracting for a new run of replacement w163 Key Fob Remotes for MB Dealers to stock !

Word was that "Huf", suppliers of original ones, went defunct so they're finding alternate suppliers.

So, keep those "almost angry" calls and letters flowing to MB - they've apparently heard it up top...!

Cheers - David

Wink yeah, but....

...I'm taking this news with the proverbial 'Grain of Salt'.

But it sounded pretty sincere, the way he told me, I didn't cajole him into promising.

I guess another w163 guy last week was bugging him for a Key Fob, and that prompted him to call their 'internal MB parts support' and upon doing that, the specialist in charge at MB Internal parts support offered up that he had just been on a conference call about the 'shortage of ML / w163 Key Fobs' and how to get production started again, albeit with a new supplier.

Funny, these rigs, despite their occasional glitchy challenges (mainly stupid sensor stuff, on our ML anyhow), keep lasting and going, and going, and going.....and running out of Key Parts !

I'm still glad I have 2 Valet Keys ordered. I'll use them, 'old school style', lol.

David

Yeah, I know that 'hope springs eternal'.

But he told me that, before I paid $ 97 total for the 2 valet keys.

Meantime, I'll just use the Valet Key as if it's my only key, thus saving the OEM Key Fobs from further wear & tear.

Heck, I'm not even sure if there is anyone who's successfully transferred their FOB Internals & Key Blade to a new case, on that fits correctly and still functions. My case on one Fob is feeling weak, imho.

I won't lose much sleep over the fact that I won't have an alarm set when using just the Valet key.

Our small east Texas town is about 99.8% crime free, so the alarm is superfluous.

I may keep one of the FOB's in console in case we are in DFW, that den of iniquity where cars are stolen every minute, and then we can have the alarm functional.

David,

Ive done it. With the cheap Asia ebay knock-off shells (comes with uncut blade) - Just have to make sure you order the correct ebay listing that has the same blade you require. There is another knock-off shell almost identical but different key blade.
Everything fits fine. The ONLY slight issue is the original OEM blade key does not close and open as smoothly in the knock-off shell and when key blade is exposed for use, it doesnt "stand straight". That's because the base of the OEM blade key is every-so-slightly off and not an exact match to the blank blade key that comes with the knock-off shell.
No biggie, everything works in the new shell and I swapped the new cut blade key and kept the OEM as a back-up blade.
