Is it a truck or SUV?

I see the w163 often referred to as a truck. I always considered trucks to be pickup trucks, with the bed in the back. To me, the W163 is more of an SUV.

We'd call it an SUV, but the truck argument can certainly be made given the body-on-frame design. If someone wanted to, they could cut off the back half of the W163 body and install a pickup bed or flatbed to make the vehicle more utilitarian.

It would be really tough for someone to argue that the W164 is a truck given its unibody design.

They are an suv we just call them trucks because they were built on a chassis and ride like a truck.

It's more of a hybrid if anything. BOF of a truck, styling of an SUV and the MPGs of a T-34.

It's a SUV.

Body on frame does not equal truck IMO.

There were lots of cars made with body on frame.
Maybe not so much these days.

Before the acronym SUV reached common usage, these were marketed as “light trucks” for a tax advantage. Luxury cars attracted more tax.

On the Service Invoices at the dealers, my W166 is still designated as a "light truck"

I affectionately call it a "truck".
With the ML55 they basically invented the badass SUV. So arguments could be made either way.
I also consider the w164 a crossover almost
