I see the w163 often referred to as a truck. I always considered trucks to be pickup trucks, with the bed in the back. To me, the W163 is more of an SUV.
We'd call it an SUV, but the truck argument can certainly be made given the body-on-frame design. If someone wanted to, they could cut off the back half of the W163 body and install a pickup bed or flatbed to make the vehicle more utilitarian.
It would be really tough for someone to argue that the W164 is a truck given its unibody design.
I affectionately call it a "truck".
With the ML55 they basically invented the badass SUV. So arguments could be made either way.
