Had a similar issue with the volume last year. Removed the radio, opened it up and plenty of accumulated dust around the controls.
Vacuumed the interior of the center console area below the center dash area.
Hosed down carefully with compressor air to clean up all the inside dust balls, etc within the radio assembly and inspected it. That seemed to resolve the issue. Nothing since.

My stereo did the same thing last week. Plays CDs fine, plays tapes fine, controls the six disc changer, but no sound from radio. Would come on randomly for a few minutes but no more. If I turn the volume all the way up I can faintly hear it. I pulled the unit out and put another one I had in...same model, RA4910, and it has the exact same problem. Will make third attempt tonight with another unit.
Apparently all of the 98-05 MCS/COMAND units have a chip for the radio that is prone to failure. There's a guy in Virginia, Jimmy Chu? that fixes them for like $200, but I just swap out junk yard finds until one works.

Volume knob uses optical encoder instead of traditional potentiometer. Any fuzz there will cause problems.

Blowjob good, whiskey bad.
