Strange Rattle When Stopping

Hey all, I have a 2004 ML350 (240k miles) that has a strange rattle under the car when I come to a stop. It only happens right before I completely stop.

It also rattles on occasion when I'm idling in Park. If I shift into Neutral, the idle goes away.

Any ideas?

The car really runs and stops great! It's just a strange rattle that happens for a second or two, then goes away.

Thanks!

I?ve only had the car for a year and I haven?t changed them. Would a transmission mount rattle like that?

What is your interpretation of a "rattle"? Do you mean a "thump"?

With a rubber mallet jump under the car and give the catalytic converters a tap. If they donít rattle tap along your complete exhaust system from front to back, hitting it side to side. Listen to see if you can duplicate the rattle.

I reckon it's a broken torsion bar bearing bracket. Just before you come to a stop, weight transfer to the front suspension loads the torsion bars. As the load is released, the bar rubs against the metal edge of the bracket support.

This video shows you how to inspect it. Check them before you start whacking your cats.

Motor mounts are liquid filled and sag/lower over time. When they get low enough the exhaust will contact the frame. The resulting vibration can lead to broken catalytic converter guts (hence the rubber mallet test) and can also produce rattles.

The transmission mount of itself does not usually lead to rattles though it and the motor mounts usually get changed together.

Motor mounts are a 100,000 mile item, generally.

43sqd asked two useful questions.
