No FM Radio Volume

My 03 ML500 has no FM volume. CD, NAV and AM work fine. I've pulled fuse 10 and 21 in hopes that would fix it. No luck. Any ideas?

So it's not volume issue but rather no FM reception. When using scan function does receiver stop on known FM stations in your area?

Please, update your profile with vehicle and location info.

No, it's volume. It does stop on known stations and you can barely hear (very faint) the sound if you turn it up all the way. Every so often it kicks in and is fine for a bit, but once you kill the engine and restart it is the same way.

One possibility is the FM antena signal amplifier unit located in the rear hatch. Some people had problems with grounding and the unit failing.. There are some posts showing the location of it..

After all these years of owning my current 2005 ML 500, it is a major unreliable vehicle with a very large/expensive repair/defect history and has been like this since brand new.

Slim chances that is the FM antenna amplifier: he has the stations but has very faint sound ...

Here is my experience, the CD on my HU stopped working about 10 months ago. Then, the FM gave up on me. I looked around to get it repaired, and I found this alternate solution on some other BMW forum.

“Jimmy Chen in New Jersey will do repairs for a fraction of the cost. Jimmy posts repair services as auctions on eBay for BMW and Mercedes. I called Jimmy and talked w/him about the problem with my display. He said it could be repaired for $180 and to mail a check for the amount and the unit to him.

Finding only limited posts/comments about him, and the fact that there is no physical business I was a bit suspicious. I searched a bit more and found some positive comments/threads on the web and decided to go for it. I mailed my display to Jimmy, and about a week half later (I am in California) I got it back.

I plugged it in and it works perfectly. So far so good!

Disclaimer: While my experiences may not reflect what you might experience, I am completely satisfied with his repair and service. I'll keep you posted as to the longevity of the repair.

In case you have this problem, here is his info:
Jimmy Chen
Alpine Electronics Repair
140 Hirshfeld Pl
New Milford, NJ 07646
Phone: 201-312-2317
email: [email protected] “.

Also, you should check the eBay # 180602808658.

In my case I wanted to get BT, iPod and NAV, so, I ended up with an aftermarket all-in-one HU that has LCD touch screen, tuner, GPS, BT, iPod, video, rear view camera, sat, SD card, USB, etc., for a total of ~$850 installed. I wish I would have done this swap four years ago. It’s such a difference.

Any other feedback?

Ironic that just today, the FM on the radio of my 2003 ML320 stopped working. No volume at all. All stations accounted for. The first time it happened, it came back on. After work when I started the car, no FM again. This time it has stayed off.

While I'm sure Jimmy Chen does great work, I wanted to try to find something that did not involve shipping the radio off somewhere.

My other issue with the whole setup is fluctuating volume.

I hate to take it to the dealer just for a radio issue. I'd rather put the money towards a new aftermarket unit.

Any help is appreciated.

First check fuse #40 in the underhood fuse box, which powers up the amplifier. Then if OK..................

Your present problem (no volume) might be caused by the malfunction of the speed dependent microphone. Remove the rear view mirror and disconnect the connector to the microphone.

Then remove fuse #21, which powers up the radio and reinsert. You must make sure that you have your radio code available, or else you will have to call a M/B dealer to obtain it.

Thanks 43sqd

MANY thanks for the information. I plan to do all of these steps, but it's interesting that this morning when I started the car, the FM came on for about 3 seconds, then cut out. So, back to the CDs. Then while on the way to work, I hit the FM button again, and it was back. It stayed on all the way to work.

So, the problem now falls into the most dreaded category of issues: "intermittent".

Regardless, I will do what you have outlined and cross my fingers.
